The purpose of this research is to understand why modern cultural education is necessary for beginning Korean learners that undergo culture shock considerably. Moreover, the aim is in planning a Web that can be used as a teaching aid of texts published by various educational institutions of Korean language and to realize this plan in actuality.
Specific details of the research for the accomplishment of these objectives are as follows:
In Chapter I, cultural education for Korean language learners, present conditions of research works on Web-based Korean language education and the need for Web-based education and have been considered.
In Chapter II, I separated existing beginners' texts (of Korean language studies) with and without a section of "culture," analyzed the cultural contents and extracted common cultural items. Also, I examined problematic points of each text. Furthermore, I proposed six plans to improve cultural education for beginning learners.
In Chapter III, I inquired into what kinds of ideas instructors and students have about modern cultural education and how cultural education is taking place in the actual site of education through a survey. The subjects of the survey were instructors(43) and students(111) of three university extensions(Pusan University of Foreign Studies, Inje University and Pukyong National University) of Korean language education. The survey was constructed with 7 questions for instructors and 13 questions for students.
Based on the analysis of texts and survey carried out in Chapters II and III, I established the cultural category and detailed cultural section of a Web in Chapter V. In addition, after examining the plan and framework of a Web, I materialized the Web for modern cultural education for beginning learners, and observed each category. Finally with the developed Web, I proposed a plan of utilizing it as a teaching aid of the current Korean language texts.
In Chapter V, I put together the attained results and proposed a few directions for the succeeding research.
