This study defined a broad sense of imperative expression to all expressions that have functions of making a listener to do any actions, and tended to understand the expression not in the point of syntax but function.
I classified the imperative expression to its four sub-functions like direction, request, proposal and inducement to synchronically find out how sentence types and expression forms do functions in conversation by influence of speaker’s intention.
This study applied inductive logic to analyzing discourse.
I had performed the first classification of expression forms that do imperative functions in discourse, after extracting multitude sentences from Korean dramas.
The second classification had been performed with the standard of sentence type to identify relation between the semantic function and pragmatic function and to compare sub-functions of imperative expression with each other.
For the last step of inductive analysis, third classification had been conducted according to semantic function of expression forms. I described specific expressive features and arranged those in the table form.
I classified the imperative expression to its four sub-functions like direction, request, proposal and inducement. Also I verified similarities and heterogeneities, and finally rearranged relations among those four sub-functions.
Moreover, I set up the purpose of this study to investigate the relation between expression forms and those function in discourses. With the result of study, I found out that the semantic function of expression forms could be used in pragmatic functions by intension of an utterance and inferences of listener. It means that multitude of expression forms can be interpreted as a specific function and a specific expression form can be understood as multitude functions in discourses.
This study aims to help establishing functional grammar by analyzing various expressions that has imperative function in discourse and listing expressions according to the function that were delivered form the analysis.
I figured out possibility that some specific function could be realized in various expressions by classifying imperative expressions into direction, request, proposal and inducement. And I expect this study would help construct the foundation of establishing functional grammar which is focused on actual usage of natural expressions.
