This cross-sectional quantitative study has done focusing on observing what kind of relationships there are between tense and lexical aspect when Korean middle school and high school students learn English as a foreign language and get the concept of tense and aspect system. On the basis of the former studies, the aspect hypothesis, which is the arrangement of universal influence of lexical aspect on interlanguage temporal systems, had been supported. This study investigated Korean tense and aspect system and examined if there was a pattern similar to the aspect hypothesis in the interlanguage of Korean students. Besides, if there are some variables which are originated in the features of Korean was also tested.
Final participants in this study are 290 middle and high school students among 350 students who answered the questionnaire, and all of them have never been in other countries for living. The 290 participants have been educated only in Korea. Elicitation tasks consist of The Frog Prince(cloze test type task to look for the usage of simple past tense), Progressive OX(to look for the usage of progressive aspect be -ing), Recollecting Memories(guided writing to look for the usage of simple past tense), and Describing Pictures (guided writing to look for the usage of progressive aspect be -ing). Also, to back up the limitations of the tasks, oral interviews have been done.
The result was consistent with the first two items in the aspect hypothesis, so when they encode aspect, the lexical aspect of verbs influences their morphology marking decision in that they mark simple past forms with achievement verbs with the highest appropriate simple past use rates and extends to accomplishments, activities, and statives, that they mark progressive forms the most with activity verbs as a competing form to simple past then extends to accomplishments and achievements. In case of the progressive form of statives, though, exceptional feature which may be caused by their mother tongue and vocabulary-learning methods has been found. According to the hypothesis, progressive marking are not incorrectly overextended to statives. The participants, however, used statives marked with progressive form, and this phenomenon was empowered in the understanding tasks. Korean students actively used various strategies to fill up their tense system.
