The purpose of this study are to understand the marital-life of Korea resident Korean men who married with women from different countries and the process of marital-life adaptation among Korean men population. A degree of association between the Korean men's attitude and traditional values and their marital-life satisfaction will closely monitored through this study.
Existing treatises on this area have usually focused on the life of immigrant-women, who married with Korean men and their difficulties. Therefore, the previous studies have limited point of views; in terms of only women's perspective, toward the marriage and omitted to understand internal-marriage as to see marriage as a whole. This study is to analyze influenced factors in their marriage-adaptation and marital-life. Identifiable characteristics of the subject of this study are examined into three areas; First, the Korean men's tendency towards to decide an international-marriage and way of selecting spouses. The men's attitude to adapt themselves into spouses' culture and forming mutual-relation will be examined. Second, the men's sociologic attributes and personal characteristics could be related to present differentiated standard of adaptation toward their marriage. Finally, the men's individualized influencing factors on the marital life and the spouses will be deeply studied.
The methodology of this study is based on the analyzing results of the survey which are about the international marriage and marital-life adaptation. Tools for the survey are 1) Measure of Korean men's values in the areas of gender role, perspective of marriage, traditional family-centered-view 2) Interrelation characteristics such as communication, conflicts, support systems ranges from family and social organization, and 3) Characteristics in a cultural adaptation attitude such as reception attitude and propagation. The adaptation which is a dependant variable was sorted out to four sub-dimensions, marriage stability, expression of affection, conjugal harmony and sharing equal responsibility as a husband and wife.
The target population of the study is the group of 215 Korean men who got married with non-Korean women in 10 small and medium cities in Korea.
The methods of the analysis are t-test, ANOVA to compare the groups of the related variables which could affect the adaptation of intermarried Korean men, Duncan test for after test, and Multiple-Regression to analyze the independent effect of the related variables.
The results of this study are founded in the four areas such as marriage procedure, marriage adaptation cor-relationship with men's sociological variables, traditional values of Korean men, and relatively influenced factors toward marriage adaptation.
First, in the majority of cases, husband paid the broker fee in process of marriage were founded. They decided to get married immediately as soon as they met candidates of wife. In this circumstance, the Korean-men presented lack of motivation to get married, difficulty in select a spouse and experienced financial problem. The result presents that Korean husbands' value has highlighted in the area of modern gender role and traditional family-center-value. In terms of cultural adaptation attitude, they have more points the mother-culture propagation attitude rather than multi-cultural propagation attitude which is accepting wife's culture. They perceives the degree of conflicts as a low rate. The support systems ranges from family to social organization which husband perceives is very high from family but not from social organization.
Second, sociological variables of men's population those affect to international marriage adaptation are husband and wife's education level, wife's current employment status, and family income. Marriage stability could be measured by wife's current employment status, kind's of husband occupation, expressive affectionate in the condition of degree of family income, harmonious marital-relationship and sharing equal responsibility as a husband and wife, education level of husband and wife.
Third, the possessed values of the Korean husbands of traditional marriage value or traditional family-center-value, they perceive the marriage stability through the expression of affection, and harmonious marital life and sharing equal responsibility as a husband and wife present high in points. The effective communication and the less perceived conflicts brings the most positive interrelation. The husband's attitude such as trying to understand wife's culture or trying to acknowledge Korean culture to wife is presented as an influential variable for adjusting their marriage. Only family support was perceived as the positive effect on martial adaptation, whereas neighbors or social organizations have no effect.
Fourth, relatively influential variables, which are related to martial adaptation, are examined in order. The whole marital adaptation depends on in the order of communication, traditional family- centered-view, conflicts, self culture propagation attitude. The marriage stability depends on in order of communication, traditional family- centered-view, and multi-culture acceptance attitude. The expression of affection depends on only self culture propagation attitude. The harmonious marital-life depends are related to conflicts, communication, and traditional family-centered-view. The sharing equal responsibility as a husband and wife in maintaining marriage, which is the degree of sharing time and thought depends on in order of communication, and traditional family-centered-view, and multi-culture acceptance attitude. As a result, the communication between husband and wife, husband's traditional family-centered-view, self-culture propagation attitude are the high influence of independent effect on the marital adaptation of international married Korean men.
The practical connotations of this study are that 1) the multi- culture education program is needed since the culture adaptation attitude of husband is the main factor of international marriage adaptation. The multi-culture education program will help intermarried couple to understand and accept different life style and culture through recognizing and tuning the differences. The transferring of perception about international marriage of the whole people is also needed to accept cultural diversity through education.
2) Second, since the Korean husband's traditional family- centered view is the main influence on marriage adaptation, there is high possibility of one-way opinion decision in marital-life. This occurs the needs of consideration of how to compromise and agree with wife's measure of value and of education to acknowledge how this traditional view could affect on their martial life.
3) Third, the factors to assist positive effect to marital-life are effective communication, present attitude to understand and being sensitive to non-Korean wife's culture rather than teaching Korean to non-Korean wives. In addition to educate importance of appropriately using nonverbal communication and importance of studying wife's mother language rule is also addressed.
4) Fourth, the result showed that Korean husbands relied on only family support without any trust in social support. As to make a consideration of increase of marital-immigrant family in Korea, a faithful government organizations and private organizations need to intervene in international marriage more systematically approaching manner.
5) Fifth, the comprehensive activities, educations, and consults are needed to offered to non-Korean women rather than intervention of civil right or personal dimension problem.
