A Study of Teaching Methods by using Idiomatic Expressions in Korean
- Focused on antonymous phenomena

This study is aiming at developing more effective and systematic education methods through idiomatic expressions in Korean. I concentrated on how to internalize easily so many idiomatic expressions as lexicon information for learners, and on what to approach first of all. For this I intended to make a certain frame for effective learning/teaching methods from an analytic point of view. I came to complete a certain system by analyzing patterns from each category, which is focused on antonymous phenomena in the idiomatic expressions. At the same time, I improved upon teaching materials for idiomatic expressions through pictures and songs.
In chapter 1, I dealt with the purpose, the object and the category of the study. So far, there were just a few cases that analyze precisely the forms of antonymous phenomena and make use of their outcomes in the field of education. Moreover, little attention has been paid to analyzing idiomatic expressions on the basis of antonymous phenomena. So this study is trying to find out an easy access to idiomatic expressions, which consist of basic vocabularies and show the analyzable characteristics. And using the usefulness of antonym in the meaning system, I analyzed the patterns of idiomatic expressions according to their antonym pairs.
In chapter 2, I discussed the educational usefulness of idiomatic expressions for teaching Korean. Idiomatic expressions turned out to be important for the syllabus of lectures, because they contain intersectional aspects of language and culture. Also, I chose an analytic approach to the idiomatic expressions, because the components that comprise idiomatic expressions are not difficult, and also the systematic analysis is possible through antonym relation. I found out that the semantic feature of each component plays an important role in idiomatic expressions.
In chapter 3, I sub-classified the pattern of idiomatic expressions which have antonym pairs. In fact, the structure of idiomatic expressions, which was thought difficult because of the indirectness of their combination meaning, shows high frequency of basic and easy vocabularies. And half or more of them were vocabularies related with human body. Therefore, we assume that when we teach these limited opposite pairs preferentially, students would learn systematically many related expressions more with ease. Meanwhile, I confirmed that the existence of antonym pair is not an absolute criterion to judge whether it is idiomatic expression or not.
In chapter 4, I tried to devise the effective educational methods for teaching idiomatic expressions. Up to now, teaching Korean by using idiomatic expressions has been done mostly through fixed text. So this study sought a easier and joyful new method, which can keep study effect more sustainable.
Finally, we left some tasks to the ulterior studies. First is to prove fully the effectiveness of the teaching methods suggested in this study in the real education field. Second is to construct enough database for listing exhaustive idiomatic expressions.
