This study aims to analyze the network of an example of a space of community-based tourism by applying Actor-work Theory(ANT). Community-based tourism has started to receive attention as a practical concept of sustainable tourism in Korea since the late 2000s. It has been defined as a method of regional tourism development with respect to the participation of residents. However, in terms of the coexistence of a tourist destination and its residential origins, a better understanding of the different application of the space is needed. This is because community-based tourism is generally based in a residential area, which creates more complications in relationships among all entities including human and non-human actors than before. Theoretically, applying ANT for the purpose of analyzing the network within the complicated space of community-based tourism, ANT observes and translates how the network has formed and changed relationships among the human and non-human actors through the passage of time. Especially, the six steps, Problématization, Point de passage oblige (OPP), Interessement, Enrôlement, and Mobilization and Betray, supported by Brouno Latour, John Law and Michel Callon as prominent scholars of ANT offer an effective frame to analyze the network of the network. For this research Gamcheon Culture Village has been selected as it has become a major community-based tourism destination in Busan, South Korea since the Urban Regeneration Project in 2009. Since then, there has emerged a wide range of events related to awards, for example, the Urban Landscape Prize from UN-HABITAT Fukuoka in 2012, media broadcastings such as CNN in 2013 and government funding. These events have aroused people’s interest both domestically and internationally; however, now the village has become the center of a discussion about the identity of village due to an excessive emphasis on the tourism industry. Therefore, tourism research is necessary to understand the fundamental features of the village by analyzing the process of spatial change rather than focusing only on tourists and residents’ satisfaction according to individual perception. The findings show that some changes have emerged between the structure of the network and actors within the network elicited from the process of interviews, field observations and surveys, internet news and s offered by public offices. The village has an open network feature and three levels of network characters: namely, A: Activating a network to revive the village after 2009, A⟶A′: Showing the network towards the tourism industry after 2012 and A′⟶A′′: Consolidating the network after 2015. Moreover, the network was organized by various actors: human actors, for example, groups of artists, stakeholders, tourists, local residents and researchers and non-human actors, for example, digital camera technology, Gamcheon Culture Village alley festivals, contents of tourism, and data from digital media. Interestingly, various actors have changed the structure of the network by alternately joining and leaving the network along with existing actors or new actors from 2009 to 2015. For instance, the groups of stakeholders have expanded their role and power within the A′ network but the group of artists have changed their position from a key actor in the A network to an actor in the A′′ network. In addition, when the tourism industry network was newly introduced after 2012, human and non-human actors actively participated in network activities to achieve greater benefits than those of the previous network. These findings on the network of the village can only be shown through ANT and suggest how Gamcheon Culture Village can be maintained as both a residential area and a tourist attraction.
