The world “culture” is one that can be easily seen in everyday life or mass media. Defined loosely, culture signifies the values or habits that a set population holds. Here, the population in general creates “popular culture” by communicating through various types of media. Popular culture is enjoyed by a variety of people, and when it is produced and distributed on a large scale by a country or a company to create a profit, it is called a “cultural industry.” Popular culture emerges in many areas through various means, but nowadays “B culture” is gaining momentum. Popular culture is a blanket term that covers a wide array of subjects, but B culture is a subset of popular culture that seeks entertainment and stimulus within its boundaries while and showing a distinct maniacal tendency. It is understood as an effective yet eclectic marketing factor. The current B culture is considered to be a form of expression within the boundaries of pop culture, yet it is assumed that B culture is a lower form of culture. The term “B” comes from low-budget B rated films that were produced as add-ons at Hollywood in the 1900’s. In Korea, A and B were understood as first or second rate. B culture is similar in its artistic aspect to kitsch. With this background, B culture gained momentum and it is now trending to the point where B culture is reaching its heyday. There are a number of reasons why B culture is being seen in a new light in modern society, and these reasons are related to the social phenomenon connected to B culture. The reasons can be divided into: personal psychology, social psychology, social, and economic. Personal psychologic reasons are the desire to pursue entertainment, or the playful, hedonistic catharsis that comes from satirizing or mocking the privileged. In social psychological reasons, the “social psychology” of social psychological reasons is a personal psychology that is created by socializing. As society becomes more diversified, people refuse the mundane, emphasize individuality, and pursue the fresh and unique rather than the ordinary. Because of this, minor brands are gaining momentum, and phenomena such a customizing, DIY, and Modisumers appear. Social factors are also influenced by an increasing amount of stress in a society that has higher crime rates, low employment rates, and values excessive competition. To relive this stress, people seek out entertainment and stimulus. B culture performs this role of reliving the anxiety and stress that comes from reality. Economic reasons lead to such phenomenon as Cheap-Chic, B rate consumption, and buying B rate goods as people are overwhelmed by higher prices and show a distinct preference for reasonable consumption. B culture is seen in movies, music, fashion, webcomics, poems, displays, catch phrases, comedy, and Youtube videos. B culture nowadays does not mean B rate, but implementing B culture as a “B cultural style.” By comprehensively analyzing examples of B culture, its characteristics seem to be reconstruction, retro or nostalgia, wordplay, promiscuity, fun, satire, and escape from the hierarchy. In particular, wordplay is closely associated with pun. Pun is a part of the sense of humor unique to B culture, and it is highly marketable in advertisements or products as well as memorable. Pun works synergistically with parodies, exaggeration, and nostalgia and becomes more effective. By analyzing the definitions of and examples of B culture and pun, I came to understand that pun is combined with nostalgia, and this is in turn related to a characteristic of B culture: retro. Inspired by the relationship between the ‘retro-ness’ of B cultural style and pun, this study established a formative experiment by combining the nostalgia of B culture and pun to create graphic designs and fonts. Taking the Chinese character for water, (水) and using pun as a key word, I used the different meanings and uses of the Korean words “물 (water)” and “수 (pronounced ‘soo’)” and applied the sounds for the Chinese character for water (水) into four pieces: ‘난 물이 달라’ (Translates from ‘Not in The Same League’ to ‘I Play in Different Water’), ‘넌 나의 one水’ (Translates from ‘You are My Enemy’ to ‘You are My Only Water’), ‘아니 이럴水가’ (Translates from ‘Oh My God’ to ‘Oh My! Water’), ‘안면몰水’ (Translates from ‘Pretending not to Know’ to ‘Giving water on face’). The fonts used were based on the Korean 1950’s – 1990’s to put emphasis on nostalgia, and applied the methodological categorization standards of expression expressed by Jinpyeong Kim’s Lettering of Han Gul. As B culture and nostalgia become increasingly popular, there has been an increase in retro fonts. Therefore, ‘난 물이 달라’ (Translates from ‘Not in The Same League’ to ‘I Play in Different Water’), ‘넌 나의 one水’ (Translates from ‘You are My Enemy’ to ‘You are My Only Water’), and ‘아니 이럴水가’ (Translates from ‘Oh My God’ to ‘Oh My! Water’), are variations on previous retro fonts, while the lettering process for ‘안면몰水’ (Without Shame) was done by using previous fonts as a motif. The font used in ‘안면몰水’ (Translates from ‘Pretending not to Know’ to ‘Giving water on face’) was designed into a specific font for the Korean alphabet and became ‘안면몰水’ (Translates from ‘Pretending not to Know’ to ‘Giving water on face’) Font and ‘안면몰水’ Modified Font. Through this study, I have comprehensively explained the definitions of popular culture, cultural industry, B culture, and pun as well as analyzed the various examples and characteristics of B culture and pun. By doing so, I have created a formative design experiment by combining the retro concept of B culture and pun.
