Modern fashion has constantly improved methodologies related to various materials and expression techniques, in order to present differentiated aesthetic senses. Through such development process, the reinterpretation of an exotic culture provides a good opportunity to discover new fashion design themes and to develop expression techniques. African primitive art, which has been genuinely keeping its uniqueness, is recognized as a unique inspiration source for the overall art as well as the fashion design field of the Western civilized society since the 19th century. The study examined and analyzed the formative characteristics of particularly the African congo traditional masks among African primitive art so that it could contribute to the discovery of expression techniques as a fashion design motif. The conclusions from the study are as follows. Firstly, a theoretical research of the African congo traditional masks' formative characteristics in terms of line, face, form, material and color showed that each element has distinctive features. The formative characteristics, that have been extracted in relation to line, face, and form, can be summarized into a curved expression, simplified expression of brightness level, and convex and concave sculpted shapes. The formative characteristics were discovered mainly in terms of texture. Woody materials, soil, shells, which were extracted from the nature, stood out the most, therefore, these expression techniques received the most attention. In regards to the formative characteristics mainly of colors, it was clear that browns, blacks, and whites were the key colors, collected from the nature, and 2-3 hues of color arrangement relations could be seen. Second, the appliqué patchwork technique has been chosen in order to apply the African congo traditional masks' formative characteristics to fashion design. It was possible to see the chance of an initially intended motif expression, through a theoretical research of the appliqué patchwork technique and practical production experiment. Expecially, in order to express the nature-oriented ingredients of the material, texture, color, and form, which stood out the most among the formative characteristics of the motif's original form as described above, the materials utilized to realize the appliqué patchwork technique were limited to genuine leather, suede, and naturally dyed silk. Therefore, it was possible to relate the appliqué patchwork technique with a long history to the historical importance of the African congo traditional masks in a meaningful way. Third, the attempt to express the African congo traditional masks' formativeness through the appliqué patchwork technique began with 6 types of motives that represent the traditional masks' formative characteristics. The process of simplifying the sculpted 3D effect during the actual production process was found to be extremely important. Making use of leather with various textures and colors yet arranging based on the 2-3-degree simplification process of a 3D structure from the motif in its original form will be able to practically support the subject realization and significance of the study. Fourth, the composition and silhouette design of the clothing, that goes well with the African congo traditional mask's motif, also required a process of reinterpretation based on the traditional mask's formative characteristics. While fundamentally keeping the origin and significance of the traditional mask in mind, a design that can effectively show the line, face, texture, and color of the motif in its original form has been attempted. Especially, in regards to line, face, and form, it was aimed to harmonize the motif's formation and the overall silhouette of the clothing, with curving similarities. Sometimes, a left-right asymmetrical arrangement was also planned to enjoy the effectiveness of emphasis. In terms of texture and color, the principle of uniformity and harmony was induced, mostly based on similarities. Lastly, in regards to the theme expression called the African congo traditional mask, the choice of materials collected from the nature was prominent consequentially. It can be said that the atmosphere of the texture and color has been determined through it. This is also related to the characteristics of the chosen motif's original form, and other attempts in terms of materials and colors should be possible if more of different mask styles are discovered and tried. The study attempted an experimental production of key references of the African congo traditional mask. It proposed a possibility of the discovery of various detail subjects and the application of a new expression technique. With the process and conclusion of the study, a variety of other approaches to subjects and expression technique developments for investigating distinct regional characteristics of Africa or other regions, and ways to connect a culture to another culture and tradition to modernity, will hopefully be attempted. ,韩语论文,韩语论文网站 |
