The objective of this study is to identify how the global citizenship of the elderly affects their multicultural sensitivity and verify the mediating effects of social capital. In our society, extensive studies have been conducted to investigate the social problems posed by the rapid entry of people into a multicultural society, with the influx of marriage migrants, migrant workers, immigrants, and foreign students who choose to study in Korea driven by the increasing popularity of the Korean Wave fever; the ways to establish systems and institutions aimed at improving the lives of multicultural immigrants; and how to educate local residents on multiculturalism. This study examines the relationship between the global citizenship, social capital, and multicultural sensitivity of the elderly that has been overlooked by existing studies to provide raw data, which can be used as the basis to realize more effective multicultural education for the elderly. A structured questionnaire was distributed among 400 elderly individuals living in the Incheon area, of which 323 copies were analyzed as data for this study. The statistical significance of the study hypothesis was verified using the SPSS 22.0 program and AMOS 18.0. Multiple regression analysis was used to analyze how independent variables influence multicultural sensitivity and structural equation analysis was used to investigate the mediating effect of social capital as a mediating variable. The highlights and results of this study are summarized as follows: First, it was found that the global citizenship of the elderly affects their multicultural sensitivity. In other words, cultivating global citizenship has a positive effect on the multicultural sensitivity of the elderly. Second, the study hypothesis that the global citizenship of the elderly affects their social capital was rejected. In fact, it was found that global citizenship does not affect their social capital directly. Third, it was confirmed that the social capital of the elderly affects their multicultural sensitivity. In other words, the higher the level of social capital of the elderly, the more its positive influence on multicultural sensitivity. Fourth, it was verified that the social capital of the elderly mediates between their global citizenship and multicultural sensitivity. Although the global citizenship of the elderly does not affect their social capital directly, the latter was found to play the role of a partial mediator between the global citizenship and multicultural sensitivity of the elderly. Based on the above results, the study suggests that the multicultural education plan should be implemented continuously to improve the global citizenship, social capital, and multicultural sensitivity of the elderly. In particular, the study underscores the idea that experience-based and relationship-oriented multicultural education focusing on daily interactions is conducive to improving multicultural sensitivity when social capital is used as the mediator. This study differentiates itself from earlier works in that it studies the elderly, who are overlooked in multicultural research. The study is significant in that it provides raw data for future multicultural education programs targeting the elderly by empirically discovering the relationship between their global citizenship, social capital, and multicultural sensitivity.
