The main objective of this thesis is to discuss the problematics of the culture borderlands revealed in Sherman Alexie’s novel, The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian. This thesis discusses the primary reason why The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian is much different from his early works, and investigates how it is possible to harmonize a dominating culture and a minority Indian culture in the multicultural society of the USA. The main focus of this discussion lies in the analysis of how the author conveys his ethical vision to readers and what effective strategies he uses to materialize his vision. In his early works, Sherman Alexie has been dealing with Indian problems in terms of justification of violence against the white society from the perspective of fundamentalism. However, he redirected his method of dealing with the Indian problems from the perspective of peaceful approaches as times went by. Sherman Alexie, an Indian writer standing on the borderland of two cultures, believes that realistic problems in an Indian reservation can be solved by way of gaining the insight concerning social issues of race and cultural difference, thereby breaking the frame of racial discrimination within the white-dominated society. Alexie represents these hopes in his work of Young Adult novel, targeting young adult readers. He tries to redress social prejudice and to heal the pain of the past and the present, by satirizing the violent situation and tragic reality with humor. Also, he attempts in his novels to illustrate the inspiring vitality that cannot be shown in sentences. This strategy of humor effectively reveals hopeful visions by rewriting in such a language as young adult readers are able to understand. What Alexie tries to communicate through the novel is to find a way to avoid violence. Alexie, who is quite different in his opinions from the fundamentalists, emphasizes the importance of communication in the environment of new culture. He described Arnold Spirit Junior Young’s journey beyond the cultural boundary as a way to expand his insight in a positive and progressive way, hoping that Indians who are assigned to the role of internal readers of the novel are not victimized to such vulnerable environments of a closed Indian reservation as poverty, violence, and alcoholism. A new vision based on his own experience tells us that Arnold, an Indian and the supporter of fundamentalism, suggests to take the first step toward the hope, and to stop the vicious circle that has been inherited down in Indian society. It is my contention that such a vision is well-represented and verified by the strategies of dark humor and cartoon illustration in the novel, The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian. ,韩语论文范文,韩语论文 |
