South Korea has become multicultural society as number of people wit h different cultural backgrounds are increasing. As a result, the ethnic make-up of society as well as school has also changed. Public schools become more diverse and demands increased for multicultural education. Reflecting this social change, the government adopted multicultural education as a part of Korea’s national curriculum. Regarding multicultural education, history education is crucial in that it encourages students’ ability to understand different countries’ history and culture. East Asia History has its significance in terms of multicultural education of South Korea for the fact that many multicultural students are from East Asia. Therefore, learning East Asian history from balanced perspective could be beneficiary to understanding between multicultural groups in our society. The purpose of this study is to analyze three different high school East Asian History textbooks from multicultural perspective using both qualitative and quantitative methods. The followings are the summary of the result of the analysis. First, in terms of offering different perspectives on a given subject, textbooks must be more diverse in using bibliographic references and sources from different countries in East Asia. This could help students to have balanced perspective on different issues of history. Furthermore, textbooks must increase the contents for Vietnam’s history and culture to provide different perspectives. Second, in order to help students overcoming cultural bias towards countries and nations, textbooks offer relatively fair description about given groups of people such as nomadic people and Japanese people. However, by omitting and overly simplifying many historical female figures in history, it fails to help students overcoming bias towards women. Third, in order to enhance students understanding of cultural diversity, textbooks offer contents that explain about common culture of East Asia as well as unique and distinct culture of different countries. However, they do not provide up-to-date portrayal about current cultural changes and interactions in East Asian countries these days. In conclusion, students-centered and research-based teaching and learning method should be examined as one of effective strategies to teach history from multicultural perspectives.
