Modern society has tremendously developed itself in terms of material and cultural area. However, modern people living in the era of sensibility want to experience God, who can stimulates their senses. In addition, a number of problems caused people to lose the meaning of their ego due to the disconnection from other people by rapid social changes. In other words, the fact that mental and spiritual areas are not advanced compared to the development of material area is true and people have doubts about the existing values because of the gap between the material and spiritual area. Under these circumstances, a movement called the 'new spirituality movement' is emerging. In particular, new spirituality movement called the "maum meditation" has been spreading quickly for recent years, and many Catholics participate in this movement without discernment about new spirituality movement from the Catholic church. The thesis, based on the warning of this problem, will criticize the reality of the maum meditation from the Christian viewpoint. In Chapter 1, I will consider five aspects from the religious and sociological perspective, which are main features of Korean new spiritual movement like "maum meditation": stressing the individualistic spirituality practice, alternative solutions to the psychological problems of the organization, the pursuit of human nature through a mixture of religious teachings, the inconsistency of faith in the well-being culture, and the commercialization of spirituality. In Chapter 2, I will analyze how the new spiritual movement gains the functional role of religion in the concept of faith, rituality and community according to the definition of true nature, and then look for the possibility of the new spiritual movement to become a institutional religion. Finally, in the third chapter, I will critically review the religious dogma of the "maum meditation" and the structural problems from the Christian perspective, and define the limitations and counter-measurements of the church regarding the new spiritual movement. In particular, the "maum meditation" of the new spiritual movement is absolutely attractive to modern people today and it seems as if it has no major problems. Basically, however, it does not care taking any means or methods and it includes the attitude which are subject to be too immersed in thoughts and acts of ignorance and neglection. Also, many victims tip-off for "maum meditation" reveal that "maum meditation" is not just a faith organization for health. For this reason, reviewing the argument about new spiritual movement is highly requested. Therefore, the thesis presents a clear investigation and problem about the reality of "maum meditation" in new spiritual movement. And, it proposes Christians with the duties of investigating the signs of times to clarify their duties with the name of the Gospel's enlightenment and proclaim the Gospel of Jesus.
