This thesis examined various cases of production of video content through Chinese capital, focusing on the heavy investment of Chinese capital in the Korean video content market. Through those cases, utilization of Chinese capital in the Korean video content market and the merits and demerits of such utilization are analyzed to examine how Korean video content market would react to Chinese capital in the future and to propose the means to maximize the advantage and minimize the disadvantage of Chinese capital. In Chapter 2, the background and the current state of Chinese capital investment in the Korean video content market are examined. For investment background, the reasons why Korean video content production business chose to attract Chinese capital were looked into. Due to the worsening production conditions in Korea, there is a limit to production of high quality content only through domestic production. Moreover, the demand for investment on joint production with Japan, which had maintained close relationship with Korean production market in the past, has decreased, and the price of publication right has fallen, thus, facing the need for diversification through new markets. Hence, a new market was sought by entering the Chinese market, which also had a positive impact on businesses based on purchasing power of 1.3 billion population of China. Meanwhile, from China’s perspective, several satellite channels have appeared in China, and the streaming service and download market have expanded due to the activation of internet broadcasting. Accordingly, a large amount of content was needed, forced to enter the Korean market to acquire planning and production know-how and to produce content that was scarce. As for the form of Chinese capital investment, there were cases in which Chinese capital acquires a part or a substantial amount of domestic business stocks for mergers and acquisitions, and there were also cases where the production cost was shared by both Korea and China for joint production. In Chapter 3, four advantages and four disadvantages of attracting Chinese capital investment in the Korean video content production market have been examined. For positive effects : First, stable production environment has been created utilizing China’s large-scale capital investment. Due to the abnormally costly production cost of domestic dramas, it has become impossible to produce with domestic fund alone. It is nearly impossible to pay all the actors and writers with production budget. So, by attracting the enormous capital of China, it has been able to meet the best conditions for production. Second, stable production environment was achieved through pre-production and market size was expanded through simultaneous broadcasting. Since there are quota regulations in China, it is often the case that Chinese capital is invested in a joint venture. This allowed the introduction of the pre-production system and enabled simultaneous broadcasting, which resulted in a natural expansion of the market size. Third, there is a positive aspect of opening a chance to change the practices of the Korean video content production market. A chance was given to reform the bad customs that were carried out without strict plans. Finally, the huge market size of China has led to an increase in the impact of additional revenue. Not only the works but also the indirect advertisers used in the works have significantly increased their profits, which brought economic benefits. On the other hand, there are negative effects as well. First, there is a growing concern that the broadcast market would collapse due to its indiscriminate acceptance of Chinese capital. By accepting Chinese capital, the market is forced to produce content that suits the taste of China, which may lead to loss of Korean color. Second, the damage is getting worse due to the increasing number of unqualified brokers and agents who are taking advantage of reckless investment of Chinese capital. Such phenomenon should be taken seriously since it is playing a part in breaking trust between Korean and Chinese producers. Third, the human resources and production systems of the Korean video content market are often leaked. Hence, not only have we concerns about losing know-how, a lot of talented people lost Korean identity while producing only the content required in the Chinese market. Fourth, investors of domestic cultural content invest less in the pre-produced drama. As Chinese capital participates in the pre-production costs, it is no longer necessary to attract other domestic investment and to receive production budget support from the broadcasters. Chapter 4 proposed ideas of how Korean video content production market should handle Chinese capital. First, government policy support is needed. In the absence of support organization, damages by inadequate brokers and agents often occur. Thus, it is necessary to establish a government-level support organization or department to prevent such damage. It is also important to alleviate the requirement to broadcast video content in China through diplomatic channels. Due to Chinese policy, there are often restrictions on the content of jointly produced shows, and foreign shows are programmed limitedly in China. By adjusting these parts through diplomacy, it should be able to distribute content that satisfies both Korean and Chinese consumers. Korean video content should also be kept differentiated through Korean cultural factors and by utilizing Chinese capital, it should prepare for the world market as well as Chinese market. In addition, it should be aware that talented people go abroad due to poor domestic production environment. So, the education of domestic content manpower should be highly noted. Finally, as new technologies such as VR and AR are introduced in the field of video contents, various methods for producing diverse content should be prepared.
