ABSTRACT Research on the North Korean Younger Refugees’ Social Settlement and the Support Measures in Gyeonggi Northern Area Doctoral Thesis of Political Science DaeJin University Department of North Korea Studies Graduate School Rhee Gyugwan The main theme of this research is the North Korean younger refugees’ social unsettlement and the measures in supporting their settlement in Korea, specially in Gyeonggi northern area. There are two questions in dealing with this research: (1) What are the main reasons of unsettlement, and (2) How can we reduce or solve this reasons? The North Korean younger refugees, who are now the Korean citizens, have suffered from various problems, such as, psychological insecurity, school violence, the low level of school performance, depressive symptom, anxiety, hopelessness, etc. These problems firstly derived from the heterogeneity between South and North Korean. Secondly, they have influence by the long-term period of escape from North Korea, which is called a traumatic injury. They experienced all kinds of dangers during their escape. Is our support system enough to take care of the younger refugees? Our central and local governments, and other organizations have tried to support them very well. However, the result would not be very satisfied in family, in school, and in society. In the family, the North Korean parents also have the generation-gap with their sons and daughters. Therefore, in normal life, there are some struggles between them. In school the North Korean younger generation could face bullying, inadaptability, physical and verbal abuses. In society, they might not stand the severe competitive system in Korea. This researcher, thus, tries to suggest the appropriate solutions in coping with the settlement-problems of the North Korean younger refugees as follows: (1) the enforcement of the cooperation in the government-level, and the increase of the relevant budget, (2) the improvement of the support measures in government and civil area, (3) the increase of the wee-class in school for them, and (4) the improvement of governmental and social concern in dealing with North Korean younger refugees. In conclusion, understanding and take caring the North Korean younger generation would be very meaningful, because their situation will be very similar in case of reunification.
