The objective of this work is to study the history and the character of ‘Degenerate Art exhibition’ which was held in the year of 1937 in the Germany. In the history of art, there has been extremely rare cases where art exhibition was planed and curated by government. Not only did this art exhibition heavily influence on that time, but on the history of modern art. From the beginning of the 20th Century, germany has emerged as a new center of art world. Before the outbreak of First World War, artists tried to use artistic presentation as a expression of their tension comes from unstable pre-war social circumstances. At the beginning, it started as a form of political resistance. But they became interested in pursuing various values and experiences. And in the Weimar era, various new style and so called ‘avant-garde’ art were appeared. Germany’s expressionism emerged at same time. But since 1933, the field of art had faced serious crisis. That was because Nazi seized the power and started to suppress artists. Nazi started procedure for cultural and ideological domination of which a method was to host two art exhibitions which have opposite characteristics. One named ‘Great Germany art exhibition’ was hosted with the purpose of cultural and ideological domination and the other one was ‘Degenerate Art exhibition’, which had opposite characteristic. In Chapter 2, we examined the character of Nazi art and the character of the historical background of the occurrence of ‘Degenerate Art exhibition’ as well. German which is from late 19th to 20th Century was experiencing rapid urbanization and therefore was severely unstable in both political and social aspects. And Hitler knew very well that cultural domination has significant influence on the administration of nation. Based on these social and political backgrounds, we examined the developmental process of German art after First World War and characteristics of Nazi art. We also surveyed the emergence and developmental process of both ‘Great Germany art exhibition’, which was hosted by Nazi with the artworks selected by them and ‘Degenerate Art exhibition’ which exhibited artworks forfeited by Nazi government. Chapter 3 is about detailed research both on the structural organization of ‘Degenerate Art exhibition’ and the characteristic of each artworks. ‘Degenerate Art exhibition’, which was held in the year of 1937 in Munich University, displayed its artwork in nine rooms located on the first and the second floors of Munich University. Artworks were displayed in very poor condition like visitors had to walk heavily up and down the narrow stairs. Although these artworks arranged in the separate rooms were classified based on certain criteria like their religious features or nationality of their artists, these artworks were not classified properly. This is because Nazi confiscated so many artworks that they could not classify each of them one by one. In this study, not only did we thoroughly classify each artworks based on their name and authors but tabularize this data for the sake of convenience in grasping the specific number of classified artworks. In Chapter 4, based on the structure and the characteristic of ‘Degenerate Art exhibition’ examined above, we studied the meaning it has in the history of art. The artworks for this exhibition were collected in a short period of time (2 weeks). Nazi wanted this exhibition to be considered as vulgar form of artwork compared with ‘Great Germany art exhibition’. Contrary to their expectation, due to this kind of peculiar intention underlying ‘Degenerate Art exhibition’ was able to draw worldwide attention. One of the positive aspects of ‘Degenerate Art exhibition’ is that it heavily influenced on the spread of avant-garde art. As suppression of Nazi was intensifying, many artists flied the country. Consequently, modern art were disseminated to the several nations by these artists. Second, it helped popularization of art. It was estimated that the number of visitors of ‘Degenerate exhibition’ was about 2 million. It was record-breaking number at that time. Therefore lots of people were able to be interested in the very new art works. Also, most of artworks displayed in ‘Degenerate Art exhibition’ were expressionistic art, which emotively expressed politically and socially unstable atmosphere of German society at this time. This functioned as some form of social framework for the purpose of giving average people emotional relief who are experiencing anxiety under the unstable domestic circumstances. And therefore this facilitated the popularization of art. Nazi’s original purpose in holding ‘Degenerate Art exhibition’ was to eliminate artworks regarded to be improper when it is seen from their point of view. After the exhibitions so many artists who were participated artists chose to retire from the artistic field. Even worse, some people killed themselves because of Nazi’s suppression. But not every artists succumbed to the suppression. Lots of artist flied the other countries and continued pursuing their passion for art. Although they are branded as ‘Degenerate Artists’ by Nazi, they propagate new form of esthetics and modernism to all over the world, including U.S. In these days, ‘Degenerate Art exhibition’ is regarded as meaningful exhibition in the early 20th century art world, in which great amount of avant-garde style artworks were collected and displayed. So we are going to study not just ‘Degenerate Art exhibition’, but other artistic activities from 1930’s to till Second World War. This study will help us understand a aspect of the modern art.
