Cut design with the motif of Frank Gehry's architecture Yang Sung-Man Department of Art Design in Living Graduate Scool of Design, Daegu University Gyeongbuk, Korea Supervised by Prof. Choi Young-Lim (Abstract) Modern society, while achieving high economic growth and rich quality, consistently aims and strives for more beauty in life to meet the desire of self-realization, which is the last stage of Maslow's 5 human stages. This human desire stimulates the psychological and spiritual parts to pursue the idea of unique and original beauty rather than just a uniform and simple appearance expression. In order to express the human instinct of beauty, we are trying to make a change with paying lot of attention to many visual elements. In particular, we express our presence and personality, and we want to get satisfied with our visual image though appropriate appearance and dressing. There are many ways to express external images, but hair design is the most important among those. Hair is an important part of the body affecting the image of the whole face, which is significant part of the modern human's desire to persue the beauty. Therefore, in order to meet the aesthetic desires of modern people, various design development and research are consistently required. In recent years, hair design has been combined with various art fields to create unique and creative hair design. In this study, we try to reinterpret the design of creative haircut by visualizing the formability and geometrical form of the building with Frank Gehry's architecture as a motif, to find the relation with the haircut design. Frank Gehry absorbs diverse cultures of architectural delicacy and color, utilizing its own unique architectural language in harmony with nature, with dynamic and organic curves felt in nature seen in architecture, structural features of architectural forms inspired by nature. The purpose of this study was to design cut formality in the field of hair design in order to express the flow of waves and the formability of flexible long lines characteristic of Frank Gehry's deconstructionism. Therefore, it is considered that the contribution of the modernization and artistic design of the cut design can be enhanced by developing the work of the creative cut design applying the formality of the architectural design. Frank Gehry was born in Toronto, Canada in 1929 and is a Polish Jew. In his teenage years, working at his grandparents' hardware store, he made model cities using a variety of metal tools and materials. In addition, his mother brought Gehry to a museum when he was a child, opening his eyes to the world of fine art. He thought that many buildings were boring and had no emotions, therefore, he gave emotion and vitality to the architecture similar to the ink paintings that bring the fish to life with a single stroke. Since his childhood, he has been inspired by fish and has drawn it into his architectural world. At first, the overall shape of the fish was maintained with the head and tail cut off, but this also evolved into a curved line, leading to flexibility, dynamics, and mobility due to fish movement during the process of abstraction. In the art 1, I visualized the fish-playfulness of the Barcelona fish building appearance through rhythm and harmony. In the art 2, DZ Bank introduced a variety of curves and nonparallel lines in a regular building to deny completeness, and expressed the geometry of curves and straight lines in a haircut. In the art 3, various non-parallel curves of the exterior of the EMP museum were distorted and visualized. In the art 4, I visualized the facade and multi-layered aspects of the facade of the Frederick R. Museum. In the work 5, the building type of Stata Center was enlarged to express the gradual flow of the straight line. In art 6, we visualized the deviation and instability of the center of gravity of the New Zollhof Nationale Nederlanden as distortions in curves and straight lines. The following conclusions were obtained from these works. First, it is observed that the shape and the formative elements of architecture are very helpful for the development of haircuts and designs by designing and making haircuts with motifs of buildings. Secondly, it can be seen that not only the geometrical representation of straight and curved lines but also various expression areas are expanded by distortion, enlargement and reduction. Third, we were able to present creative hair designs at the same time as meeting the aesthetic desires of modern people. In this thesis, we tried to find the significance to maximize the beauty value of art by expanding artistic expression area and developing infinite ideas of haircut by visualizing the formality of Frank Gehry 's architecture and presenting creative and individual works. We hope that this research will be used as basic data for hair design in the field of cosmetology and will be useful for presenting images through haircuts to modern people searching for improved personality and diversity.
