The most fearful moment a person experiences during the life he/she lives only once might be when the death is coming close. Universally the loss of the beloved leaves a big scar deep inside the heart of the living man, not only the emotional but the physical pain for the rest of life. It is certain that the death of a person has a great impact upon people around or arouses deep change of emotion.
Traditional funeral rites set up the healing period as 3 years necessary to get over from the impact of death, enough time for bereaved family to get back to stable life from the sadness due to the bereavement. It must be mostly the influence of the developed Confucian culture that laid stress on In-Ui-Ye-Ji(benign-righteous-courteous-wise) and filial piety. With such influence of Confucian culture, this country received the symbolic name of DongbangYeuiJiguk(the country of courteous people in the East) recognized worldwide. Until now, the influence of Confucian culture, which considers etiquette seriously and maintains it, has continued and changed, being taken as the essential ideology of domestic life.
Practice of the makeup of the dead contains its meaning traditionally. It emphasizes the practice that the living conducts to the dead for the last time based on the filial piety of domestic fundamental thought. This is a critical process as much expressed as the virtue of Jonghyojido(終孝之道/expressing the reason of filial piety to the last moment) that emphasizes filial piety even until the end of life. It also shows dignity to the dead and recovery, considering the parting with the bereaved family left. For such reason, traditionally Banham(飯含/the event or process to fill the mouth of the dead with bids or rice in washing) was conducted to recover the dug face and to make the dead look like the appearance of his-her lifetime, and lipstick and rouge spot was put on to make the face of the dead beautiful. This worked greatly in easing the sadness of the bereaved family. In modern age, however, makeup of the dead is conducted to only a few despite that the makeup technology has such been developed.
The traditional funeral rites were simplified in modern days to respond and adapt to social trend that has been rapidly changed(change of generation and age). The merit of Confucian culture is also declining(loss of In-Ui-Ye-Ji, trend of human negligence, materialism, loss of humanity). To cope with it, the climate of changing epochal recognition so called death preparing education(well-dying and well-aging) is under formation. A positive change of conception of culture is necessary and it is urgently required to change recognition.
This research helps recover the dignity of the dead as well as helps the bereaved family naturally accept the parting with the dead through the makeup of the dead. It also eases the pain of the heart after losing the deceased by making the final appearance of the dead to be remembered as a peaceful look.
For this reason, makeup of the dead, especially the make-up of face consoles the bereaved family, despite the short period of 3 days funeral settled down as the funeral rites in modern age. Therefore it becomes an opportunity to help the bereaved family come back to society quick and stable to the highest degree. Accordingly the makeup of the dead, especially the make-up of face, is much more important process for the dead and the bereaved family in this rapidly changing modern age. Furthermore, the emphasis of the necessity of makeup of the dead will spotlight the importance of the funeral rites and contribute to development of the conscience of people in this unstable society.
