The Aesthetics was born in tendency of culture secularization meaning interest in specific life. The academic name was put by German rationalist philosopher Baumgarten in mid-18th century. The influx of aesthetics in Korea took place as part of cultural policy of Japanese imperialism in a manner of implanting the Japanese school system in Japanese colonial era. Therefore, the aesthetic tendency of trying to achieve a modern state in Japan by a thorough study of the West has followed.
After Korea's liberation, the aesthetic education began in earnest in universities and graduate schools including Seoul National University. And the aesthetic society such as The Korean Society of Aesthetics, The Korean Society of Aesthetics and Science of Art, The Korean Society of Korean Aesthetics has been actively deploying activities. In particular, the contribution of Aesthetics in Korea is that it was widely introduced the advanced western aesthetic theory in the country.
Also it led efforts to establish the Korean Aesthetics. The most controversial and problematic issues in establishing the Korean Aesthetics were five: Clashing of aesthetics, Discussion about aesthetic characteristics of Korea, Debate about Mut, Korean aesthetic consciousness, Aspects of the Korean Arts. By consideration of these issues in turn, it sought theoretical system of Korean Aesthetics. As a result, Korean Aesthetics was to construct a theoretical system came mainly ‘Korean aesthetic consciousness’ and ‘Aesthetic characteristics of Korea’.
The establishment of Korean Aesthetics has closely associated with the building a theoretical system of Korean Aesthetics. Korean Aesthetics has the academic system through historical research and theoretical research about Korean Aesthetics. The history of Korean Aesthetics does concern Korean native aesthetic thought, aesthetic consciousness, aesthetic characteristics, etc. The theory of Korean Aesthetics is divided into the theory of Korean beauty and the theory of Korean arts. Among the main issues of Korean Aesthetics, ‘Discussion about aesthetic characteristics of Korea’, ‘Debate about Mut’, ‘Korean aesthetic consciousness’ correspond to the theory of Korean beauty, ‘Aspects of the Korean Arts’ corresponds to the theory of Korean arts.
This was presented to the Local Aesthetics theory such as an extension of the main issues of Korean Aesthetics. First, it proposes five aesthetic types that can be applied to the local. Five types are aesthetic characteristics of nature, aesthetic characteristics of art, aesthetic characteristics of human, aesthetic characteristics of urban, and aesthetic characteristics of living. And it tried the concept defined for these five types. The aesthetic characteristics of local which locality is well exposed can be extracted from these five types. Under the premise, the aesthetic characteristics of local will appear aesthetic qualities or aesthetic concepts rather than aesthetic categories, it tried to develop Local Aesthetics theory hypothetically and preliminarily.
Local Aesthetics studying the aesthetic life of local has the academic system through historical research and theoretical research about Local Aesthetics. The historical research is the history of local aesthetics, the theoretical research is divided into the theory of local beauty and the theory of local arts.
When the Local Aesthetics theory is applied to Busan, it takes on the appearance of Busan Aesthetics. Busan has grown from colonial city to modern city. Busan Aesthetics as Local Aesthetics takes note of 140 years of time, 70 years from open harbor to liberation and 70 years from liberation to now.
Focusing on this period, it explored the aesthetic characteristics of nature of Busan. And it was investigated for the aesthetic characteristics of art of Busan through arts of Busan, artists of Busan, works of art covered Busan. Arts of Busan are largely divided five genres (movie, fine arts, performance, music, literature). And then it explored the aesthetic characteristics of human of Busan, the aesthetic characteristics of urban of Busan, the aesthetic characteristics of living of Busan in turn.
Research has shown that the aesthetic characteristics of Busan which the locality of Busan is well exposed can be defined as Hwatong (broad-mindedness). Due to the influence of the aesthetic characteristics of nature of Busan and the aesthetic characteristics of human of Busan, Hwatong becomes representative aesthetic consciousness and aesthetic characteristics of Busan. Hwatong is correlated with the sublime, Giants-honor consciousness, marginality, wild nature, toughness, etc. Hwatong has four kinds of aesthetic qualities. These are hybridity, dynamics, resistibility and ephemerality.
Hybridity which first emerged as aesthetic qualities in Hwatong is due to crossbred culture on the long lasting in Busan. Hybridity is correlated with duplicity, entangling, Japanese style, medley, disorder, sense of difference, defamiliarization, openness, magnanimity, liquidity, diversity, multicultural, etc.
Dynamics which secondly emerged as aesthetic qualities in Hwatong is due to passion melting together the disparate. And then makes to dream of the progressive and adventurous future. Dynamics is correlated with sense of comradeship, loyalty, progressiveness, hot, practicality, wandering, freewheeling, adventurousness, progressive spirit, progressiveness, frontier spirit, etc.
Resistibility which thirdly emerged as aesthetic qualities in Hwatong is due to the influence of broad-mindedness based on and having contrasting aesthetic sense. Resistibility is correlated with resistive, wild, tough, loud, marginality, independence movement, pro-democracy movement, labor movement, rock, indie music, etc.
Ephemerality which fourthly emerged as aesthetic qualities in Hwatong is due to frivolousness of harbor city. Ephemerality is correlated with maritime city, Buddhists city, the end of the earth consciousness, cremation culture, break, frivolousness, wanderer, etc. In particular, Ephemerality is the background of the sad mood of Busan.
Hwatong as the aesthetic characteristics of Busan which having four kinds of aesthetic qualities (hybridity, dynamics, resistibility, ephemerality) has never discussed in Korean Aesthetics. It is evident that Korean Aesthetics did not reflect even the aesthetics of Busan, the second city in Korea. Therefore Korean Aesthetics must be reconfigured. Furthermore, reflecting aesthetic characteristics of various local in Korea, it is possible to call Korean Aesthetics at last.
The Aesthetics is a study to research aesthetic problems of life philosophically and scientifically and then to apply to reality. If aesthetic problems of life are proposed from the national level, the study can be called National Aesthetics. Also if aesthetic problems of life are proposed from the province or region or local level, the study can be called Provincial Aesthetics or Regional Aesthetics or Local Aesthetics.
Paying attention to this relational concept of local, Local Aesthetics will have the various levels. It is possible to call province or region in nation local, and to call nation or region in East Asia or the World local. Therefore Local Aesthetics can be called Provincial Aesthetics, Regional Aesthetics in individual country, National Aesthetics, Regional Aesthetics like the East Asian Aesthetics, etc.
Local Aesthetics is expected to play a role of guide ropes which casting and pulling in the systematic net of Aesthetics theory. Therefore Local Aesthetics will be performed useful criterion to research aesthetic problems of life which human-beings facing now and here philosophically and scientifically and then to apply to reality.
