Color terms, as language symbols used to express the color, are not only an important part of language, but also the main research subject of linguistics. Both Korean and Chinese colors terms are quite rich and full of varsity in expression ways. South Korea and China lie in the same culture area, so there are many commons places in the color terms. However, due to the impact of diversity in geographic environments, historic cultures, traditional customs, ways of thinking, and so on, the color terms of the two countries show differences in morphology and culture meanings. Up to now, s on color terms mainly focus on the basic color words and their culture meaning comparison. Little work is done on the comprehensive comparison on the base of color word family.
By induction, analysis and comparison, this studies on 160 Korean yellow color words and 89 Chinese yellow color words. In the second part, the components of the yellow color words in Korean and Chinese are studied. In Chinese, compound words take the main parts of color terms while Korean trend to apply rich affixes to distinguish the nuances between the color terms, resulting in plentiful derivational words, which is also the reason why Korean color words are massive and abundant. At the same time, this summarizes the common places in word formation of the Korean and Chinese color words. In the third part, the basic meaning and symbolic meaning are compared between the two countries’ color words. The basic meaning analyses are conducted in three aspects: brightness, chroma and the non-color meanings which introduce the differences and similarities of the two countries’ color words. Korean color terms have 7 symbolic meanings while Chinese have 15. Also, reasons why the same yellow color has different symbolic meanings are derived. In the last part, the summary of the is given.
In conclusion, the works done in this are meaningful and helpful, which can help to comprehend the corresponding literature and culture, have a better understanding of the color terms for language learners, as well as adaptively use them.
