There was a lot of change on education as well as language after
the inflow of massive Western culture at the end of the 19th century
which was the period of enlightenment in Korea. With the thought that
educating the whole nation was namely to enhance national prosperity,
there was growing recognition that women should be educated. Thus,
places and textbooks were made for women's education under the
purpose that women should equally be educated since both men and
women have the same legal rights. In this period, preceding study was
mainly dealt with contents of the textbooks merely used for women's
education but study on korea linguistic aspect tended to be relatively
less than the textbooks for men's education. Therefore, this was
intended to examine the study on characteristics of lexical semantic
aspect and inscription of Chodeungyeohakdokbon 『』,『Nyeojadokbon』,
『Buyudokseup』 which were the Korean textbooks used for women in
the time of enlightenment in Korea.
The second chapter generally examines Korean in the period of
enlightenment. The third chapter deals with lexical semantic
characteristics of women's Korean textbooks with the comparison and
analysis classified according to prefix consonants, final consonants,
continual writing, syllable writing, double writing. Prefix consonants
are analyzed concerning inscription prefix ‘ , ’ ㄴ ㄹ and inscription of
final consonants are examined with final double consonants and rule
of seven final consonants. The fourth chapter is classified with Korean
native words, Sino-Korean, loanwords to find out the characteristics
of lexical semantic aspect based on the women's textbooks. Korean
native words are categorized according to fundamental vocabulary
classification dealt with『Korean semantics』by Im, Ji-ryong. Sino-Korean
are classified with combination with Sino-Korean and Korean native
words into adverb derivational suffix such as ‘-다’, ‘-되다’,
Loanwords are sorted with newly-coined words and loanwords
As a result of it, the textbooks were published in the same year. In
spite of the textbooks with the identical purpose they are distinguished
in terms of the word spacing and choice of words and so on.
Here is a textbook named 『Nyeojadokbon』 that is described with the
most similar way of loanwords and Korea's single Hangeul notation in
modern age. Likewise even though 『Buyudokseup』 was a self study
textbook, it consists of multidirectional contents and has shown that it
was enough to enhance women's knowledge in the time of
enlightenment. In the case of 『Chodeungyeohakdokbon』, it reflects
fairly well the image of the transition period for the present as it
mostly contains fidelity to families as women unlikely the purpose that
women and men are equal and women should learn as well.
