Textbooks are critical components in Korean education and play an important role in teaching and learning physical education. The goal of this study is to identify the problems in the current physical education textbooks in middle school and thus make a proposal for improving textbooks according to the 7th National Curriculum. For this study, 11 physical education textbooks were analyzed in terms of form and content. The conclusions were as follows;
First, when it comes to technical terms in textbooks, some different words were used to describe a same term, and same Korean terms were used together with borrowed words even in the same textbook. Also, a lot of errors were found in spacing words and spelling system among different textbooks especially when describing pictures. Furthermore, every textbook was using different terms for the same sports competitions, athletic facilities and gymnastics. The inconsistent use of technical terms can make teachers and students confused in teaching and learning process. Therefore, physical educator should make an effort to standardize technical terms and try to change borrowed words into Korean ones by cooperating with physical education teachers and sports specialists.
In the aspect of athletics and game rules, the revision of game rules was not reflected in the field of running, swimming, taekwondo and handball. In addition, there were some wrong descriptions which were not suitable for common facts of athletics, and borrowed words were excessively used when explaining game rules. Wrong description or incorrect facts mentioned in textbooks have a negative effect on the credibility of the textbooks. Therefore, it is considered that the textbooks should have more concise explanations and there should be a system that makes textbooks adjusted every year so that they can reflect the revised game rules.
Finally, in case of Korean spelling system and borrowed words, differently spaced words were presented although they were the same term especially in Gymnastic Unit. Moreover, there were some wrong written words, omitted words and nonstandard terms particularly when describing body parts. Based on the analysis above, it is demanded that textbook authors should be more attentive to standard language to improve the quality of the textbooks when they revise them.
