This study is aimed to examine lexical appearance of new words and figure out the process of word formation, using data collected by the National Korean Laboratory on new words. The study on the phenomenon of new word formation is a part of research of language formation, which analyzes elements forming new words, and clarifies the lexical features of new vocabulary of modern Korean.
In the second section, this study defines the fundamental notions of new words and clarifies the distinctive features of the words, classified by classes and types of language. Dividing new lexis into word classes, the one of the salient characteristic appearing is that nouns occupy 90% of new words. According to the assortment by types of language, new words consist of proper nouns, foreign words, hybrids, and Chinese characters, each holding 5.7%, 14.7%, 24.4%, and 49%, which shows Chinese characters are remarkably productive.
The third chapter studies the phenomenon of word formation, classifying the words according to types of word formation into blends, compounds, derived words, and clipped words. Derived words are divided into prefixed words and suffixed words, and compounds consist of syntactic compounds and asyntactic compounds. Blends undergo the process of elimination partially, and it is caused on the ground of practicality. Clipped words take compounds as basic form, holding the highest practicality, and distinguished from compounds in the point that the clipped words are used with original words.
In the forth section, the conclusion of this study is carried with the summary of overall content, and the research tasks for ongoing future are also described: the discussion on word formation considering the external factors of language formation such as the causes and background.
