ABSTRACT A study on the foreign words used in the 7th education curriculum school textbooks Lee, Sang Gyu Major in Korean Language Education Graduate School of Education Korea University of Education, KOREA (Supervised by Professor Lee Gi-Dong, Lid. The purpose of this study is to investigate the foreign words that are used in Korean language textbooks of elementary school, middle school and high school and find an appropriate principle of guidance through the analysis of the frequency and the conditions of foreign words. This investigation was carried out by analyzing the foreign languages used in the textbooks of elementary school, middle school and high school through using the method of statistical linguistics and a proposed a substitute for foreign languages. The results are as follows. The number of foreign languages that are used in elementary Korean language reading textbook is 322. Among these 322 words, the number of words that appear in several different grades, as well as in only one of the grades, is 418. The total number of foreign language used in all textbooks of each grade is 1538 and the average usage of each word is 4.77. The number of foreign words that appear in middle school language textbooks and in everyday language is 658. In these 658 words, the number of words that appear in several different grades, as well as in only one of the grades, is 929. Compared with 322 in the elementary school textbook, this is 2.04 times as many. Also, the number of vocabularies used is 2.22 times as many as the number of vocabularies used in elementary school which was 418. The total number of foreign words used in middle school textbooks of all grades is 2835 and each word has an average usage of 4.31. High school Korean language textbooks I and II have 170 different foreign languages. Including the words that are repeated, the number of foreign words is 188.
