Foreign words have already permeated our society deeply, and will have increased in future. The misuses of them have made our language lives turpid, while it is true that they have played the role of lubricant.
I looked about the methods of writing them down and analysed them wholly in this thesis.
I received the definition that they are the words taken from foreign countries, but different from the foreign language, and used with our language in Chapter 2. And I claimed that we should accept them subjectively there.
I also studied the ways of receiving them, the reasons why they are used, and the specific gravity that they hold in our language lives.
I mentioned the methods of describing them minutely in Chapter 3. I had the point of view that we had better change them for the pronunciations used in our country now.
If we have a look at the basic principles of writing them down, we must describe them with the 24 letters, the consonants and the vowels. But I explained that we have to change the principles in order to write them down with the 40 letters, the consonants and the vowels. It's because assimilated sounds and diphthongs aren't recognized that we describe them with the 24 letters. So I claimed that we should fix voiceless plosives for consonantal suffixes and make the derivation of words clear.
According to the present methods of writing them down, assimilated sounds aren't acknowledged. I evolved the drift of the argument that we must admit the descriptions of assimilated sounds naturally since we use the ways of describing them by standardizing the pronunciations used in our country now. Because the pronunciations of such words as ‘gas, goal, dance, double, butter, bond, sauna, siren, jam, and jump’ are as follows: [kkas], [kkol], [dd□s], [dd□bl]/[ddabl], [bb□t□r], [bbond], [ssauna], [ssairen], [jj□m], and [jj□mp].
We can prevent the present confusion by recognizing plural standard foreign words and present the direction to proceed.
I applied the grounds made plain in ‘the basic principles of description’ to each clause in ‘the minute rules of the English description’. The consonantal suffixes of plosives must be written at the back of diphthongs except that they are at the end of the syllables behind consonants. The present ways of describing foreign words were accepted for such problems as [□] and [□], long vowels, and the descriptions of diphthongs.
I mentioned the problems of pronouncing vowels even if they aren't in the rules of writing down foreign words. In case of ‘[□]-[a]’, there are ‘[n□mb□r]-[nambar], [dain□mait]-[dainamait], [mast□r]-[mastar], [bon□s]-[bbonas], [indi□n]-[indian], and [ton□m□ nt]-[tonament]. In case of ‘[□]-[o]’, there are ‘[sp□nzi]-[sponzi], [e□k□n]-[e□kon], [k□mpas]-[kompas], and [pr□poz]- [propoz], In case of ‘[i]-[e]’, there are [mit□]-[meta], [steinlis]-[steinles], [siment]-[sement], [komidi]- [komedi], ‘[p□mflit]-[pamflet], and so on. In case of ‘[□]-[a]’, there are ‘[gr□m]- [gram], [s□l□d]-[salada], [□kses□ri]-[aksesari], [kilogr□m]-[kilogram], [b□l□ns]-[balans], and the like.. ( The pronunciations in front of the mark ‘-’ are standard ones.)
I narrated the principles of writing down the names of people and places consistently. The Chinese divided the present names from the past ones in describing the oriental ones of people and places, and permitted describing the past ones of them like the pronunciations of Chinese characters. According to the methods of describing the Japanese language, the Japanese wrote down names, and that was the distinction within the range of the culture of the Chinese characters. It was insisted that the past Japanese names of people and places should be written down with the pronunciations of the Chinese characters.
It was explained that the most important thing is to make how people use and pronounce foreign words clear, and to decide the methods of describing them on the basis of that.
I think that it is a good way to gather data from people and to take the statistics of the data so as to establish the exact methods of writing down foreign words.
