The purpose of the current study was to investigate the ability of Verb recognition depending on Thematic role type for person with aphasia. Fifteen individuals with aphasia and 15 age- and education-matched normal individuals participated in the study. The task consisted of the three types. Task 1 was Agent selection after verb presentation. Task 2 was Theme selection after verb presentation. Task 3 was Verb selection after agent and theme thematic roles presentation. Participants selected a word among 3 words after seeing verb and thematic role. Accuracy(%) served as dependent measures in all tasks. The two-way mixed ANOVA, independent sample t-test and Pearson correlation were performed. For the Agent selection after verb presentation, difference between the groups was statistically significant. Difference between the tasks was statistically significant. A two-way interaction between the groups and thematic role types is statistically significant. For the Theme selection after verb presentation, difference between the groups was statistically significant. For Correlation analysis each task, between theme selection task and verb selection task was statistically significant correlation. But between agent selection task and verb selection task was not statistically significant correlation. For Correlation analysis between each task and Aphasia Severity, between theme selection task and information content in spontaneous speech was statistically significant correlation. Between Verb selection task and Aphasia Quotient(AQ), information content, fluency, naming was statistically significant correlation. But agent selection task was not statistically significant correlation. These results indicated that agent thematic role was difficult for person with aphasia to be influenced by omission of subject which is characteristic of Korean. Interesting result was that ability of verb comprehension affected a verbal output in person with aphasia. Further research would be required to spontaneous speech analysis to figure out specific factors between the tasks and verbal output.
