The purpose of this study is to understand the present condition of instructive reading strategy and suggest direction of teaching reading strategy in the future by investigating teaching aspects of reading strategy in class, how Korean language professors are instructing the Korean language reading classes, and awareness of professors on reading strategy. To this end, this study conducted questionnaire survey and personal interview on professors. The following are the analysis contents of questionnaire and interview. Korean language professors considered learning vocabulary and grammar importantly in Korean reading classes. The reason is because students can assume the text contents beforehand and understand the contents more easily if they become fully aware of vocabulary and grammar first. Also, 96% of professors responded in questionnaire survey that they understood reading strategy, but 7 out of 8 professors responded that they did not fully understand the reading strategy in interview. They said that they have learned learning strategy in college and graduate school but did not study specific type or form of reading strategy, and all 8 professors responded that they have never studied teaching method for reading strategy. Also, they responded that reading strategy is not clearly provided in reading classes. The reason is lack of instructional hour and lack of knowledge and experience of professors. It was identified that majority of professors were instructing by depending on teaching materials through interview, and responded that they need to instruct by focusing on the texts in teaching material for assessment because contents on teaching material lead to assessment. Then, this study investigated reading strategies that professors have suggested and used by class level by analyzing the reading instruction plan that professors who participated in questionnaire survey have prepared to identify actual teaching aspects. The analysis results of actual instruction plan of professors are as follows. It was identified that professors have only used a strategy of confirming contents and failed to suggest various reading strategies that would help students to recognize the necessity of reading strategy and learn and train reading strategies on their own. This study intends to make several suggestions that can be conducted in Korean language institutes based on the analysis results of questionnaire survey, interview, and guidance plan of professors. Teach students to learn and train reading strategy on their own by operating a special class for students with academic purpose in addition to the Korean language classes. Also, select or produce teaching materials for learning·training reading strategy. Also, it would be necessary to master teaching methods through training in Korean language institutes if they did not study teaching methods of reading strategy in undergraduate or graduate school of Korean language education. Lastly, professors need to take explicit methods when instructing the reading strategy. Melting reading strategy into teachers speech in reading classes can be helpful for improving reading ability of students, but use explicit methods for students to learn and train reading strategies on their own. This study investigated awareness and use of reading strategy of Korean language professors. Also, this study suggested methods for teaching Korean language reading strategy in the future. Follow-up studies are expected to be conducted on ways of teaching and effects of reading strategy in Korean language class by using results of this study.
