This study aims at to discover how different the pragmatic usages of demonstratives ‘this(these)’ and ‘that(those)’are in English and Korean on translation. First, this study shows the functions of demonstratives in Korean and English. Demonstratives are originated from deixis. According to Fillmore(1997) and Lakoff(1974), there are four types of deixis; space, time, discourse & anaphora, and social deixis. Functions of demonstrative will be explained by those deixis.
English demonstratives are divided into two groups-this(these) and that(those) based on the physical distance of a speaker; proximal and distal. From the physical distance, it can be extended for psychologic and time. Korean demonstratives are divided into three groups; ‘이, 그, 저’.
Korean demonstratives are unmarked because they do not have an article so English demonstratives are sometimes omitted when translated into Korean. Also, Korean is inclinable to use an antecedent instead of using a demonstrative because it is less dependent on demonstrative system. Korean demonstratives and English demonstratives are not always matched because the boundary is ambiguous. Speakers' subjective opinion and view can be considered when it made different result.
There are five types of referential expressions during translating into Korean with examples. The first type is 1:1 translation, English ‘this’ translated into Korean ‘이’and English ‘that’translated into ‘그’or ‘저’. The second type is omitting, not translated. The third type is demonstrative ‘this’or ‘that’which repeats themselves for its original precedents. The fourth type is translated into different word. The fifth type is crossing translation. ‘this’ can be translated into ‘저’or ‘그’and ‘that’ can be translated into ‘이’.
Each type of expressions has different environment. When English demonstratives are omitted, three constituent of sentence can be omitted, modifier, subject, and object. According to the statistics of three texts, Interview, Novel, Speech, the highest omitted constituent of the sentence is modifier. Because Korean can omit the subject and object depend on the context and situation compared to English which is very strict for constituent of sentence. Also, the plural is not mandatory in Korean, so they can be translated into the singular. When they are translated into different words, 4 environment can be categorized: time, personal pronoun, the name of country, and etc. Time and personal pronoun are the most translated into different words in Korean because of different culture and tradition. When they translated crossly, ‘this’precedent and ‘that’precedent can mostly founded. This can be explained by different deictic selection. English writers and Korean translators chose different deictic so it can be translated crossly.
