To convey the information that the speaker has effectively, the speaker uses the sentences that can be used in the different discourse situations by using the various grammatical devices such as word order, rhythm, and morphemes, although they have the same proposition. Linguists said it reflects the speaker’s intention to convey meaning for that situation to select a particular language expression in a particular situation. Therefore, it cannot be explained the sentence meanings regardless of the utterance situations and contexts and speakers and listener which is used the grammatical devices.
This study examines the Information structure that reflects the speaker’s utterance intention and assumptions of discourse to the grammatical structure. Based on the Information structure that was introduced to explain the notion of topic and focus, it examines whether ‘nen’ that has meanings of topic and contrast in Korean is related to the Information structure or not and suggests a teaching-learning method of ‘nen’ for students who have finished beginning level by introducing the Information structure that have never been discussed in Korean language education.
Information transfer structure is divided into three structures: ground-focus structure which can divide parts into known, expected or new and unexpected parts, topic-comment structure which explains the topic which was already explained, and link-tail-focus structure which has link that is called topic in the focus-ground structure. Sentences that the content of proposition is the same but can be used in the different discourse situations are differently encoded based on the way that each type instructs. Therefore, understanding characteristics of each factors can be helpful to understand the usage of ‘nen’ concretely and accurately.
In light of the Information structure, the topic plays a role as a connecting link in a previous discourse that is already known to the speakers and the listeners and has aboutness, initial position and definite characteristics. Contrast has negative meanings about factors that are not selected in the sentences. It also has the meaning of scalar implicature. Once it set a hierarchy between selected factors and alternative set, higher factors trigger the negative implicature. In addition to, 'nen' has different rhythmic characteristics when it is used as a topic sign and as a contrast sign. Contrast 'nen' has prosodical prominence, in other words it has sentence stresses.
Based on it, it suggests that the teaching-learning method of 'nen' which has the meaning of topic and contrast that have aboutness, initial position, and definite characteristics and of scalar implicature by understanding the topic-comment sentence structures for the students who have finished beginning level.
