The aim of this study is to describe the function of discourse marker 'yo' based on contextual analysis of discourse marker 'yo'. Discourse Marker 'yo' is a grammatical morpheme, which has the meaning of a function word. In the context of spoken discourse, there is a characteristic of imparting the function of discourse marker to elements with grammatical meaning. In this study, the grammatical meaning and the discourse function of 'yo' were identified as elements on the other layers, and 'yo' was recognized as a discourse marker. The function of discourse marker 'yo' summarized in the previous research was reconfigured into 13 functions of 5 types by applying binding relationship between discourse components. In order to verify that the function of the discourse marker 'yo' proposed in this study is actually used in everyday language life, we conducted a survey of Korean native speakers on the perception of conversation appropriateness. The results of the survey showed that there was a high level of awareness about the function of the discourse marker ‘yo’. A contextual analysis of 100,000 words in the 21st Century Sejong Corpus was conducted by setting up an analysis framework based on the discourse marker function of 'Yo' verified by the survey of recognition. Previous studies on 'yo' have focused on the morphological, syntactic association or discourse distribution of 'yo'. The analysis of 'yo' in the pragmatics dimension did not analyze the different discourse marker functions according to the changes in the situation because the structuring of the discourse components was not realized. In contrast to this previous study, in this study, we try to analyze the function of discourse markers in a discourse context by presupposing "yo" in the sentence as discourse markers.
