The purpose of this thesis is to analyze the terms and translations of
"Chinese and Korean idioms dictionary" from the perspective of Chinese
students learning Korean. "Chinese and Korean Idioms Dictionary" is an
idiomatic dictionary published in China in 2009. This thesis researches the
relationship between idiom entries and Korean translations in order to make
supplement to the four-word idioms in Korean learning. This research also
compares and analyzes the idioms in Korean language textbooks published in
South Korea and those appeared in the TOPIK exams in order to analyze the
Korean four-character idioms and their corresponding Chinese translation in
"Korean Idioms Dictionary". This analysis will be helpful for the compiling of a
Chinese and Korean bilingual idioms dictionary and provides accurate translation
in Chinese term.
Contents of this thesis are summarized as follows:
First, the second chapter illustrates the correspondence between Chinese terms
and Korean translations included in "China and Korean idioms dictionary". The
number of Chinese entries and Korean translations are calculated according to
the four-word Chinese idioms and different styles of Korean translation. Korean
four-character idioms are mainly correspondent with a single Chinese idiom.
Here is the proportion of the correspondence “1: 1 (88%)> 1: 2 (10.5%)> 1: 3
(1.4%)> 1:43 (0.05%), 1: 5 (0.05%)." The conclusion of this analysis is “the
same type and the same meaning (67.7%)> the different type and the same
meaning (30.1%)> the same type and the different meaning (2.2%)” in the order
presented.
The third chapter analyzed the Korean translation of four-word Chinese
idioms in "Chinese Korean idioms dictionary" for Chinese Korean learners. In
the "Korean idioms dictionary". The four-character idioms in Korean language
have been negligent and left behind, especially those appeared in Korean
language textbooks and TOPIK exams but not included in this dictionary. So
this dictionary should be supplemented and improved based on the frequency of
the four-word idioms used in textbooks and TOPIK exams.
Chapter IV is based on Chapter two and Chapter III. It provides suggestions
for the improvement and supplementation of idiom entries and their translations.
They were summarized for Chinese Korean learners of Korean education. First,
it was pointed out that there was a need to add or increase four-character
idioms in the "Chinese Korean Idioms Dictionary"; secondly, proposal of adding
Korean and Chinese idioms was offered in order to make the dictionary
bilingual; thirdly, some idioms related with Chinese poetry and historical
background should be removed or deleted. For Korean learners, these idioms
were seldom used in their daily life and they were not so helpful from the
stand point of Korean education. Finally, more Korean idioms were proposed in
the to help Korean language learners utilize four-character Korean idioms
alone in daily life.
It is hoped that through the research and analysis, this thesis can not only
help Korean learners with their study of idioms, but also assist the compilation
of bilingual idioms dictionary so that when learners use this dictionary, they can
find the correct translations of the corresponding idioms. Meanwhile, may
Korean learners have more interest while learning Korean with this improved
dictionary.
