The phonemic writing system movement and the mechanization of the Korean language began in the early 20th century. By looking back to the history of the phonemic writing system movement and the development of the Korean typewriter, I reviewed how the phonemic writing system movement affected the development of the Korean typewriter.
As the first result, the hypothesis that the phonemic writing system movement promotes the Hangul-only writing system was verified by examining both the concept and the continued practice of the phonemic writing system movement by Choe Hyeon-bae. Even after the distribution of typewriters in Korea in order to promote further the Hangul-only writing system, Choe Hyeon-bae proceeded with the phonemic writing system movement. The phonemic writing system movement had a positive impact on the Hangul-only writing system.
Second, the 2-set keyboard and the 2-set input method that was used in the phonemic writing system typewriter was examined. This keyboard and method was developed as a by-product of the phonemic writing system movement that exists on computer keyboards and the input methods that we use now. This was made clear through the process of change of the typewriter keyboard. Finally, it could be verified by reviewing the history of the typewriter from the first use of the phonemic writing system typewriter to those of today.
