A Study on the Re-translated American Novels: Focusing on Motives and Cultureme The purpose of this study is to investigate why literary texts, already translated in the target culture, is translated again into the same target language. Retranslation is a widespread phenomenon in many cultures and there are also many motives. However, more related research have not been done in Translation Studies. Therefore, this study seeks to three main research questions: 1) Why literary texts are being retranslated? To be more specific, what are external and internal motives for retranslation?, 2) Does it have an effect on translation strategies that translator uses? And 3) If so, How does it specifically affect the target text? In order to examine these questions, the researcher selected two English source texts: Alex Haley’s Roots and Harper Lee’s To Kill A Mockingbird and five target texts. This research was undertaken as follows. First of all, in order to find out motives for retranslation and used translation strategies, the paratexts like translator’s epilogues, publishing company’s book review and articles were analyzed. Second, in order to analyze the differences between first translated text and re-translated texts, cultureme was selected for analysis object. And then, translation strategies of cultureme were analyzed through Franco Aixelá(1996)’s translation strategies. Finally, through the result of this analysis, the validity of the Retranslation Hypothesis also was investigated. The findings of this study are as follows. First, external and internal motives give rise to retranslation. The former is the phases of the times, change of public market and publication right problem. The latter is translator’s belief of translating and readers- response consideration. And these motives are not independent but interactive. It also affects decision on translation strategies. Second, in the case of Roots, generally a high rate of foreignization strategy was found in both TT1 and TT2. On the other hand, in the case of To Kill A Mockingbird, as a result, more foreignization strategy was used in all TTs, but the important fact is that a rate of domestication strategy greatly increased between TT2 and TT3. In other words, same translator selected different translation strategy when retranslating. Finally, the Retranslation Hypothesis is not valid in both ST. Despite the fact that the scope of this study is limited to two English novels and cultureme, this study is meaningful in that it tried to investigate various motives for retranslation and dealt with both cases of different translator and same translator. It is expected that this study will lead to active discussions on retranslation phenomenon and motive.
