Abstract
The purpose of this study was to analyze the materialization of writing assignments in Korean language workbooks and, with this, to explore more effective and adequate writing assignments.
Recently, despite the fact that the writing aspect in Korean language education has become more emphasized, the reality is that the research done on assignments in workbooks is insufficient.
Taking into account that the language workbooks are what the teacher and student use to connect, for writing education to be properly carried out, not only should there be more research on the principles and methods of teaching, but also the improvement of writing assignments should be investigated. This study was begun using these reflections as its background.
The contents of the study are stated in the following.
Chapter I introduces the purpose of the study as well as explains the contents and procedures of general research, along with a look into preceding studies, done on the education system of the Korean language and writing assignments within the workbooks.
Chapter II examines the concept of writing and the teaching-learning theory as well as the components of writing assignments.
Chapter III analyzes the exercises done on Korean language workbook writing assignments, using the theoretical investigations dealt in Chapter II. The workbooks used for this study were chosen accordingly to the standard, from the pool of workbooks developed by the Korean language education research center attached to domestic universities. The writing assignments were analyzed by the components of rhetoric and progression. Through this analysis, it became apparent that the writing assignments were lacking in both rhetoric and progression.
Chapter IV suggests solutions and reformed writing assignment contents using the arguments about the problems of the current writing assignments within Korean language workbooks presented in Chapters II and III.
To improve the Korean language learners’ writing abilities there must be more development in types of writing assignments in the future. Furthermore, the necessity of writing assignments that guide the students to better writing is suggested.
