The purpose of this study was to investigate teaching and learning plans to combine elementary Korean lessons with children's songs for female marriage immigrants. For that purpose, the study proceeded with a focus on discussions about the selection of children's songs according to the variables of learners in the elementary level, articulation of selected children's songs with the syllabus of an elementary textbook, and design and results of children's songs-articulated teaching and learning.
First, I analyzed the frequency of children's songs in 7 books of "Childcare Programs for Infants: Ages 0∼2," one of the teachers' manuals commonly used at educational institutions for young children today, and in 33 books of "Teachers' Manual for the Nuri Curriculum: Ages 3∼5," another of those manuals, to select children's songs by taking into account the learning levels of elementary learners and their children's age. As a result, a total of 57 children's songs were selected.
Secondly, I built an external and internal articulation model based on the types of articulation proposed by the articulation theory to articulate the Korean syllabuses with the 57 children's songs selected, analyzing and articulating the lyrics of selected songs according to the external and internal articulation model. The primary procedure involved the analysis and articulation of their lyrics based on the external articulation model in their community with the vocabulary, grammar, and culture content in the syllabuses of "Korean 1 and 2 with Female Marriage Immigrants." The secondary procedure involved the analysis and articulation of their lyrics based on the internal articulation model in their hierarchy with the vocabulary, grammar, and culture content in the syllabuses of "Korean 1 and 2 with Female Marriage Immigrants." The final results of articulating the syllabuses of "Korean 1 and 2 with Female Marriage Immigrants" with 66 children's songs were presented by unit.
Finally, I designed a teaching and learning model to articulate children's songs with vocabulary, grammar and culture lessons and introduced an instructional plan for six of 66 children's songs articulated with the syllabuses of "Korean 1 and 2 with Female Marriage Immigrants." In an effort to examine the effectiveness of teaching and learning plans, I gave six lessons articulated to children's songs to 33 students of Stage 1 or 2 taking a regular Korean course at the Multicultural Family Support Center of Sejong City, conducted a survey and interview, and analyzed the results to determine the effectiveness and problems of the lessons. As a result, the students studied the knowledge of vocabulary, grammar, and culture expressed in the children's songs in a complex manner rather than studying only the knowledge of a single domain articulated to the learning content in a fragmentary manner in children's songs-articulated lessons. As for the effects of complex learning, they repeated the knowledge they already studied and expanded the linguistic knowledge they had not learned yet. The learning effects of repetition and expansion were significant among the students of high learning or motivation level and small among the students of low learning or motivation level.
The present study holds its significance in that it selected and presented 57 children's songs by taking the variables of learners into consideration and proposed an articulation analysis model to articulate children's songs with teaching materials. A teaching and learning model for Korean with articulations to children's songs was also designed and applied to actual lessons. The lesson results were analyzed with the survey and interview responses. The interview data recorded, collected, and transcribed during interviews will be particularly significant in research on the utilization of children's songs in Korean education.
