We experience lots of emotion in our daily lives. Among a great deal of emotion, LOVE is one of the most primitive emotions and closely connected with language. The metaphorical expressions related with the conceptual metaphor 'LOVE IS A JOURY' can be understood by most people. So LOVE is a universal concept of emotion human beings have. This study aims to compare the figurative meanings of LOVE expressions found in English and Korean proverbs and find out the similarities and differences between the two languages. To do this, this thesis did a comprehensive study on the figurative meanings of LOVE expressions in English and Korean proverbs in terms of conceptual theory METAPHOR and METONYMY. The data for example sentences is collected mainly on the bases of English and Korean dictionaries. Some sentences are also extracted from websites which include ones with proverbs, dictionaries and quotes. LOVE expressions in English proverbs are 84 sentences on metaphor and 7 sentences on metonymy, while in Korean proverbs 60 sentences are on metaphor and 12 sentences on metonymy. Every example is analyzed in terms of the judgement of value such as positive, negative and neutral figurative meaning. In addition, all figurative expressions are categorized according to relational point of view containing lover, family and general relationships. The results of this study are as follows: First, almost every example in both English and Korean proverbs has positive expression about LOVE. Second, most sentences on metonymy in both proverbs are expressed by 'THE PART FOR THE WHOLE' metonymy. Third, the majority of examples in English proverbs are about lover relationship, while most of those in Korean proverbs are about family relationship. Finally, LOVE is mainly expressed like being given and taken in English proverbs, while the elderly give LOVE and the young take it in Korean proverbs.
