The purpose of this study is to provide effective plans for guidance on word spacing in Korean. This study was based on two sets of criteria.
The first was based on the email interviews with Korean teachers in English speaking countries. The second was analysis on word spacing errors of English speakers in TOPIK writing.
Word spacing is important in understanding the meaning of the text accurately, and it increases the efficiency in language use as well. The problem is that it is difficult even for the Korean native speakers because of complicated rules to follow. Unfortunately, this implies that word spacing is very difficult for foreigners who do not have an intuition in Korean.
Especially, English speakers made certain patterns of errors on word spacing due to the differences between their native language and Korean such as postpositions, dependant nouns, and auxiliary predicates which English doesn't have. Also, the contraction of ‘not’(n't) affected English speakers to make non-spacing errors in Korean writing. As a result, a significant number of errors were found because of the negative transfer
from the their mother tongue, English.
Therefore, this study mainly focused on the error patterns which were caused by interlingual factors rather than intralingual factors. This study then went on to examine how these factors affected the English speakers making errors on word spacing in Korean.
Also the study conducted interviews to Korean teachers in universities in the U.S.A. and at Sejonghakdang in English speaking countries by email to find out how and what they teach for Korean word spacing. The interviews consisted of ten questions asking about teaching methods, over coming difficulties, and suggestions in teaching word spacing.
Based on the interviews and error analysis, the study suggested some effective plans for guidance on word spacing not only for English speakers but also for non-English speakers who use English as meta language to learn Korean.
To help the English speakers apply word spacing correctly and reduce errors, systematic and consistent instruction on word spacing must be followed.
Key words: word spacing, English speakers, error analysis, interviews, plans for guidance, systematic and consistent instruction
