The purpose of this study is to explore translation patterns of the thematic structures in English-Korean translated texts and to investigate the differences of themes in the two languages. To analyze the thematic structures, this employs Hallidayan theme-rheme structure in English and Korean texts. The attraction of the Hallidayan model is that it is very simple and useful to follow and apply compared to the thematic structures proposed by the Prague School.
Chapter 2 is mainly focused on theoretical background for Hallidayan thematic structures in English and compares them with Korean thematic structures considering linguistic similarities and differences of two. English and Korean share basic patterns of thematic structures but there are several differences in syntactic structures of the sentences too. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate the characteristics of translation patterns of the thematic structures between English and Korean in detail. Chapter 3 focuses on introducing a methodology for translation analysis of selected texts and discussing the analysis results with the appropriate examples based on unmarked, marked and multiple themes including textual, interpersonal and topical themes according to Halliday’s thematic structure classification. Some findings of this study are summarized as follows.
First, in unmarked theme’s case, the themes of dynamic verb clauses represent high agreement in frequencies maintaining the same themes from ST to TT in novel texts. However, the themes of stative verb clauses have low agreement by a shift of themes. As a result, the translation patterns of themes in dynamic verbs are opposite to those in stative verbs, which means that the characteristics of verbs can be important factors that can influence thematic choices in the process of translating.
Second, in marked theme’s case, Korean themes tend to keep the original thematic structures of ST in both novel and non-novel texts. Therefore, the translators should respect the marked themes in original texts and translate the themes that the author wants to emphasize as faithfully as possible.
Finally, in multiple themes’ case, translation patterns show different aspect for selecting themes depending on the text type. The multiple themes in novel texts tend to undergo a shift of themes to the simple structure while the thematic structures in non-novel texts have high agreement with translated texts maintaining the same multiple themes from ST to TT.
In most cases, it is possible to apply and translate the thematic structures in the process of translating by sharing similarities of two languages. Therefore it is required to maintain the thematic structures to deliver the author’s messages. However, it can be modified according to the distinctive qualities of Korean to keep equivalence in meaning. Keeping that in mind, translators should be able to use these characteristics as one valuable option for thematic translation.
