The number of Overseas Korean is getting bigger and bigger because of
globalization. The need of specialized Korean education for those overseas has
gotten to have importance. In comparison with studies for overseas adults, previous
studies for overseas children are not adequate enough to be used as data base for
Korean education for overseas children.
The purpose of this study is to observe Korean syntactic development of overseas
children in terms of bilingual circumstance so that the result can be used as data
base of the studies for Korean education for them. For that purpose, this study
observed eight boy preschoolers living China who are in bilingual circumstance of
Korean-Chinese.
This study was conducted qualitatively by focusing on collecting language
development data of eight boys. This study was conducted cross-sectionally by
observing several boys at same research time. Collecting language development data
was done in two ways; One was conditioned so that certain language syntax and
function could be observed. The other was unconditioned so that syntactic
development could be observed as it is.
The observation experiment of this study was conducted according to three
stages. Pre-experiment stage was designed to understand bilingual circumstance of
eight boys. In experiment stage, Syntax Meaning Comprehension Test and
Grammatically Judgement Test were used as tools in order to observe
understanding ability of Korean syntax of eight boys. Boys’ utterance was also
collected in order to observe expression ability of Korean syntax of eight boys. In
post-experiment stage, all the data and numbers collected from the experiment
stage was analyzed to see tendency of syntactic development.
First, the more a child had been exposed to Chinese, the lower his syntax
meaning comprehension was.
Second, grammatically judgement ability of 8 boys was lower than children of
same age in Korea in average. However, the more a child had been exposed to
Chinese, the higher his grammatically judgement ability was.
Third, Analysis of language data showed that syntactic development of eight boys
was delayed. This could be shown through the numbers and diversity of
production of particles. Moreover, the more a child had been exposed to Chinese,
the less he produced particles in one sentence.
The observation of this study can be used as data base in studying specialized
Korean education for preschoolers overseas. However, This study has its limits
since it was focused on small numbers of boys. It is proposed that subsequent
studies should have the universality to incorporate both sexes, ages and languages
with more participants.
