Purpose
This study aims to provide basic data for the improvement of proficiency in Korean language and the development of Korean education program for Vietnamese migrant females. In order to look into the difference in the pronunciation of Korean stops between Vietnamese migrant females and Korean females, this study measured and analyzed the values of VOT of Korean stops in two groups and looked into the errors and characteristics of Vietnamese migrant females’ pronunciation of Korean stops.
Subjects and Methods
The subjects of this study were 13 Vietnamese migrant females and 13 Korean females. Those who did not have problems with the structure and function of articulators and language disorder as the subjects. As speech samples, the subjects were asked to articulate and record each syllable of Korean stops /p/, /pʹ/, /pʰ/, /t/, /tʹ/, /tʰ/, /k/, /kʹ/ and /kʰ/ in each environment of the following vowels (/a/, /i/ and /u/). All speech samples were collected and analyzed by Praat program. For statistical processing, a t-test and a Mann-Whitney test were conducted.
Conclusios
The conclusions of this study are as follows: As for the average of the VOT values according to the articulation method, the aspirated were the longest in both groups, followed by the lenis and the glottalized.
As for errors in pronunciation by the Vietnamese migrant females’ group, according to the articulation place, most occurred in the bilabial, followed by the alveolar and the velar. There were most errors, according to the articulation method in the lenis, followed by the aspirated and the glottalized.
As for errors in pronunciation by Vietnamese migrant females’ group, there were the most significant errors of pronouncing the lenis as the glottalized, the aspirated as the lenis and the glottalized as the lenis.
It was found that there were statistically significant differences in the average of the values of VOT between the two groups in the entire lenis, and followed by the glottalized, having statistically significant differences.
In the future, a follow-up study should secure a sufficient number of subjects and inquire into the entire Korean consonants. Furthermore, it seems that looking into the obstruent of female marriage immigrants from various countries and then contrasting and analyzing their errors and characteristics by country will be a meaningful study.
