Based on the critical mind of the weighted tendency of Korean literature education as a foreign language to the linguistic · cultural goals, emphasizing the individual growth as the goal of literature education, this study examined the texts of a Korean modern short story. Focusing on the 'transaction theory' by Rosenblatt as a methodology, among the grand prize-winning novels like Yi Sang Literary Award, Modern Literary Award, and Dong-in Literary Award, the 「Five Pleasures for Those Who Take Walks」 by Kim, Yeon-su and the 「The Morning Door」 by Park, Min-Gyu as analyzed
What is the most basic in the literature education is the issue of teaching 'how' and 'what'. Teachers of Korean language are required to pay close attention and efforts to considering if the literary texts provided to learners are suitable for the purpose of education and also selecting them. In order for learners to achieve the individual growth through novel texts, learners should be able to read/understand texts and then to connect them with their own experiences, instead of staying in the level of learning the language and culture. It means that novel texts should contain the contents that could be connected to foreign learners' experiences, instead of simply containing linguistic · cultural information.
Rosenblatt's Transaction Theory considers the inter-transactions of both sides as important focusing on learners' experience and texts, which can be a methodology that can achieve learners' individual growth as a goal of literature education in this study. Rosenblatt argues that we should select the targets that can 'evocation' learners regarding teachers' role, and also consider if learners can 'react' through the 'evocation' in the subject and contents of the selected targets. It is the basis of that this study has targeted Korean novels since the 2,000s to analyze novel texts. In other words, it is to secure the contemporariness with the present when learners are living. The literary background far from the present can be simply staying in the level of delivering the cultural information and circumstances of the time. This study examined the possibility of its application to the literature education through the analysis on the 「Five Pleasures for Those Who Take Walks」 by Kim, Yeon-su among the grand prize-winning novels of the three major literary awards of Korea like Yi Sang Literary Award, Modern Literary Award, and Dong-in Literary Award, focusing on the elements that could connect Korean language learners' experiences with texts, which is the 'arousal', the main contents of 'transaction theory' by Rosenblatt.
This has pointed out the research tendency weighted to the linguistic/cultural aspect even though such complementary relations between language, culture, and individual growth as the goal of Korean literature education as a foreign language have been acknowledged. This study is expected to become a foundation of studies on novel texts that can be used for the educational purpose of individual growth in the literature education.
