The objective of this research is to explain the characteristics of the Korean vocabulary commonly used in beginning and intermediate Korean level textbooks in People’s Republic of China.
Students rely heavily on the text book as it is an important medium through which knowledge is transferred. Therefore, this research is set out to analyze how the vocabulary is used in Korean text books in China, and how it is used differently in Korea in order to understand the impact vocabulary has on language study. This research has analyzed the vocabulary in a few Korean language text books that are most commonly used in China.
In Chapter 1, the significance of analyzing the vocabulary used in text books, the objective of the research and its scope and procedure are clearly laid out.
In Chapter 2, reviewed previous studies on existing Korean language text books in Korea to understand the research method. In addition, reviewed research studies on the selection of basic vocabulary for education purposes in Korea. Furthermore, looked at the current state of research studies on Korean language text books in China so as to build the theoretical foundation for the analysis of textbook vocabulary.
In Chapter 3, three most commonly used beginning and intermediate Korean level textbooks are chosen as research subjects, and based on previous study determined the criteria and template for the analysis.
In Chapter 4, studied the usage of vocabulary in Korean language text books in China, by conducting quantitative analysis on vocabulary type-token ratio, volume, repetition, classification of proficiency, distribution of word class based on previous studies and theories.
In Chapter 5, studied the characteristics of vocabulary used in text books based on qualitative analysis. First, analyzed the most-frequently used vocabulary by word class to determine the characteristics of vocabulary used in Korean language text books in China, and studied the difference as compared to text books in Korea. In addition, analyzed the vocabularies for different proficiency level that are used only in one of the two countries to further clarify the difference.
In Chapter 6, described the result of the study, its significance and its benefits and limitations.
