The purpose of this study is to conduct a macroscopic analysis on content development structure of narrative text produced by KFL learners and microscopically analyze the complexion where tense and aspect are realized in narrative text. This is an attempt for an analysis in overall text and macro-structure level beyond the level of grammar such as morpheme or sentence, focusing on the fact that tense and aspect are the grammar items that represent temporality, one of the most important properties in narrative which is a form of description frequently used not just in KFL field but also in daily life. For this, first, this establishes a model for content development of universal narrative text through review on theory, analyzes the structure of text produced by KFL based on this model and finally, on the basis of analyzed structure, observes the complexion in which tense and aspect are realized at text level .
The organization of this is as follows. In the first chapter, it illuminates the necessity and the purpose of this study, and sets research questions, then by following these, considers preceding researches on narrative text structure and realization of tense and aspect within narrative text. The second chapter observes theories related to the structure of narrative, and provides a concrete analytic frame for analyzing content development structure built on common features from cases of studies which analyzed the macro-structure of narrative. Moreover, after examining academic achievements so far, it attempts to establish an analytic standard suitable for distinctiveness of KFL learners’ narrative text.
Chapter Ⅲ explains experimental procedures and method for collecting text, gives details of grounds and process of choosing text subject, and describes an analytic frame for narrative structure and tense·aspect used as a study tool and concrete guidelines, exceptions etc. which is necessary for analysis. Chapter Ⅳ analyzes and describes the result, not only relying on quantitative analysis, but also doing qualitative analysis on complexion where tense and aspect are realized in context of overall text. As a result, KFL learners’ content development structure of narrative text can be largely classified into four categories, not digressing too far from universal structure. Only the presence of ‘abstract’ and ‘coda’ of which existence depends on text and the position of ‘evaluation’ which can be located anywhere are changed. There is exceptional text, but it is the level of difference that can be accepted according to the contents and perspectives.
After analyzing whether there are differences in realization of tense and aspect or not according to each of structures analyzed by content development, and also after analyzing what this complexion is like, this confirms that the past tense is generally used due to the property of narrative itself which describes the past. However, each structure has their own properties. Especially, as a result of classifying description on case into foreground and background according to Discourse Hypothesis, most of foreground is simple past tense, while in the background the use of simple past tense decrease, and various tense and aspect that could not be seen in foreground appear. Also characteristics of tense and aspect which are different from other structures are found.
This study has its significance in two ways. First, it analyzes the content structure of narrative text and tense·aspect, grammar items which are important due to characteristics of narrative by linking them. Moreover, it overcomes existing standards of EFL that most of the researchers utilized to analyze tense and aspect, and attempts to establish an analytic frame based on academic achievements of Korean linguistics. However, it still has limits because it lacks the consideration on whether there are certain narrative structures that Koreans prefer or narrative convention that varies due to cultural distinctiveness. More persuasive conclusion can be obtained not only in narrative structure but also in tense and aspect study if the text of native speaker directly comparable to that of KFL learner is collected to be analyzed together.
