This study focused on language phenomena under various social background and taking Yeonbyeon, a city among Korean-Chinese people, as an example, this aims to explore language use, language change and language attitude. The study compares the results with Lee, ick-seop(1996)'s study, Park, kyeong-rea's study(2002) and also compares with the languages of Korean-Chinese in other areas of China or in Korea.
Language diversity and sociality are two significant topics in then filed of social linguistics. Yeonbyeon is the representing city for absorbing Korean-Chinese population. In Yeonbyeon, there are not only a mix of Chinese and Korean-Chinese language, but also a mix of North Korean, Korean language and different dialects of it. Under this special language environment, Korean-Chinese will make language choice based on various social factors. Informants were Korean-Chinese people. In order to analyze questionnaires, the present study used Microsoft Excel and SPSS, particularly those elements which are mutually related.
In Chapter 2, I described the goal and method of this study, and presented the theoretical background of this study, the history of Korean, the language policy and the language environment. and the change of social environment .
The focus of this to explore the language application and language attitude condition of Korean-Chinese in Yeonbyeon. In Chapter 3, I have observed the problem of child education and the relationship between Korean-Chinese people's culture and language. It is shown that the most Korean-Chinese people have a good command of mother tongue, because they have learned and used mother tongue during childhood. It is also demonstrated that Korean-Chinese peoples acquire Korean more fluently than Chinese. Language choice of Korean-Chinese people differs according to family life, social life, and utterance situation, but they use their mother tongue for the first language. Generally they choose their mother tongue when talking with their family members, but when they do not know who the hearers are, Korean-Chinese people choose chinese. This provide an analysis to the language application of Korean-Chinese from both the synchronic and diachronic perspective. Synchronic analysis focuses on the language usage condition of Korean-Chinese in Yeonbyeon, while diachronic analysis focus on related language change and development, code-switching during language communication of Korean-Chinese is also analyzed in detail.
In Chapter 4, I discussed how Korean-Chinese people have evaluated the affirmative of the korean speech. Through the analysis of their language attitude, the following aspects can be understood how Korean-Chinese like Korean-Chinese, Korean language and Chinese, and their choice for language learning and suggestion for korean language development.
Finally, summarizes and concludes the contents discussed above. This will help to summarize the diversity of korean language and make language policy for oversea community.
