This study is designed to present curriculum planning that reconstructs ‘standard curriculum for Korean schools overseas,’ curriculum developed by the nation for effective
Korean language teaching, to suit current Korean school’s situation and purpose of education.
Until now, studies about Korean learners abroad centered on stable settlements of temporary stayers on their mother countries after returning or how to enhance identity establishment and communication abilities of immigrants who are 2nd generation an above. Korean school, the object of this study, which the researcher of this study has
been part of for 10 years, started from a group with characteristics separate from the existing Korean learners abroad. However, there are insufficient numbers of studies on 1.5 generation and 2nd generation learners, the object of this study, who have stayed overseas for long period of time, because they immigrated during the early stages of
immigration period, when the Korean schools were just beginning to be established. Also, in preceding studies about 1.5~2nd generations, there are only results that they were typical heritage language learners and that their use of Korean language was outstanding. Because early U.S. immigration period’s typical heritage language learners are different from the learners who are the object of this study in periodical and social background additional need analyses about the early immigrants and reconstruction of Korean language curriculum in Saipan Korean school, where learner pattern changed from the pattern centered on temporary stayers, was required. For this, this study proceeded in this way.
First, through the preceding studies, the need that the Korean language education of Korean children overseas must be looked at from the perspective of heritage language
and be the foundation of curriculum planning was made clear and the characteristics of Saipan Korean school were understood. Also, existing preceding studies were examined and the problem of appropriateness that arises from applying the standard curriculum proposed by Ministry of Education and Science Technology (MEST) as it is was presented.
Second, Koreans overseas and heritage language, Korean language education in heritage
language, and Korean language education of Korean schools overseas were carefully
observed.
Third, heritage learner’s purpose and goal of learning Korean language and parts that
have to be reflected in the curriculum were examined through carrying out and analyzing
need analyses and in-depth interviews.
Fourth, the composition of ‘standard curriculum for Korean schools overseas’ was
analyzed in the perspective of heritage language and reconstruction principle, direction,
and procedure needed for Korean school’s Korean language curriculum in heritage
language were presented.
Fifth, Korean language curriculum of Korean schools overseas in heritage language were
substantially reconstructed and presented, and lastly, the contents above were summarized
and organized and the purpose and limits of this studies were presented.
This study started from an interest of a teacher who strived to reorganize, construct,
and adapt current Korean school’s curriculum using the standard curriculum developed by
the nation from researching the condition and need of Korean schools all over the world
from 2002 to 2009. This study is very meaningful in that it showed the ways and
procedures of reorganizing in Korean schools in similar environment or other areas
besides the Korean school that is the object of this study. Also, the number of existing
studies on heritage language learners are insufficient, but this study attempted to carry
out highly qualified study through researching Korean schools overseas or the purpose
and demand of heritage language learners.
However, the reorganized and constructed Korean language curriculum were not able
to be evaluated through applying this to the Saipan Korean school itself, and quality
based study focused on future heritage language learner’s characteristics, purpose and goal
of learning Korean language, and maintenance of Korean language skills of heritage
language learners is necessary. As it could be seen in Lee, Dong Jae’s (2003) study about
typical heritage language learners, the concern that their Korean language skills might
rapidly decrease should be considered. To maintain heritage language learners’ language
skills, customized curriculum and textbooks are essential. For succeeding studies, various
studies like studies about Korean school’s curriculum with heritage language learners,
development of textbooks, and diagnosis and evaluation are anticipated.
