A study on the method to teach Korean particle '의' for Japanese-speaking learners
- Focusing on the usage comparison of '의' and 'の' appeared in Quasi-Colloquial materials -
The meaning and function of Japanese particle 'の' is much more diverse compared to Korean particle '의' and also '의' can be omitted in many cases, particularly in colloquial speech. On the other hand, 'の' can rarely be omitted and there is a large difference in the actual usage of those particles.
Although there have been many studies conducted to compare Korean particle '의' and Japanese particle 'の' focusing on the difference between them, the previous studies were mainly on literary language despite the fact that the difference in usage of '의' and 'の' is more significant in colloquial speech. Therefore, the present study focused on the difference between '의' and 'の' in colloquial speech and aimed to suggest teaching methods related to '의' for Japanese-speaking learners.
In Chapter 2, meanings and functions of Korean article '의' and Japanese particle 'の' were organized respectively. The correspondence of 'の' to Korean words was divided into and compared between three cases including; when 'の' corresponded to '의', when there was no corresponding words, and when 'の' corresponded to other words. The appearance and omission of '의' were also organized.
In Chapter 3, the scripts of a drama produced in Korea and Japan were analyzed to investigate the use of '의' to 'の' in colloquial speech. The result found there were many cases that '의' appeared with specific nouns in the scripts of Korean drama. Also, the result of a questionnaire survey to Korean native speakers with regards to the essentiality of '의' in colloquial speech showed that '의' used with particular nouns were less omittable than '의' in the mandatory appearance environment of '의'. On the other hand, 'の' appeared much more frequently than '의' in the scripts of Japanese drama, and the appearance was stable in any environments.
In Chapter 4, teaching methods related to '의' were explored based on the results obtained through the analysis of the quasi-colloquial materials. It was considered important to teach a use of Korean particle '의' which is essential in colloquial speech, and a use of Japanese particle 'の' which does not correspond to '의', and teaching methods were suggested for elementary level, intermediate and advanced levels after presenting a teaching method using actual examples appeared in the scripts of Korean and Japanese drama.
Since '의' used with particular nouns is essential while there are limited cases of comitative postposition '의' required in colloquial speech, it is considered effective
to teach leaners by creating and presenting a list of such nouns. Although there was limited corpus analyzed in this study to present a list, the future challenge is to create a list of nouns that require '의' using larger scale colloquial corpus.
