Bilingual reality and English education with multi-cultural children according to the order of mother’s mother tongue in Korea. The Journal of Studies in Language. This study examines how children from multi-cultural family in Korea acquire English literacy by comparing the sentence structure, that is, word order, between English and the mother tongue of the child’s mother. On the assumption that children whose mothers’ L1 have the same or similar sentence structure with English will easily learn English, this study selected children from multi-cultural families with different mother tongues as subjects. The mother tongues are Chinese, Japanese and Vietnamese. To start with, to understand the current situation of multi-cultural family in Korea and bilingual education for the children from those families, this examines the history and development in governmental policies for those families. And then, this investigates how many children can speak their mothers’ L1, and what makes them learn the language and which advantages bilingual children can get from bilingual environment as well. Finally it proposes that children from multi-cultural family learn English in their mothers’ L1 additionally if the sentence structure and word order of the language are same or similar with those of English. It can be suggested that the effective English teaching method for the children is after school tutoring or summer vacation programme with teachers who can speak the their mothers’ L1.
