A Study on Third Language Acquisition of Korean Case Particles: Focusing on Chinese-speaking learners of Korean, who learned Japanese
The purpose of this study is to reveal what effects the prerequisite learning experiences of Japanese have on Chinese speakers learning Korean case particles from the perspective of third language acquisition.
For this, Chinese speakers learning Korean were divided into two groups according to whether they had experiences of learning Japanese. Whether or not Japanese has effects on their acquiring Korean case particles were examined by measuring acquisition levels of subject & object particles among the Korean case particles.
Chapter 1 presented the purpose & background of this study, and reviewed the domestic studies on acquisition of third languages and the foregoing studies on Chinese speakers' acquiring Korean case particles. It was found that no studies have been conducted on third languages acquired by Chinese speakers learning Korean, who occupy a considerable portion of those learning Korean.
Chapter 2 presented its theoretical background. The concept of a third language was clarified, and theories of acquiring third languages were arranged. Also, various transition hypotheses on third language acquisition were reviewed.
Chapter 3 presented overall contents of the experiment such as experimental objects, tools, procedures, analysis methods and etc.
Chapter 4 presented the results gained based on the experiment of Chapter 3. The results showed differences in acquiring Korean case particles according to whether they had experiences of learning Japanese. In the basic level, Chinese speaking learners with experiences of learning Japanese generally had higher level of Korean case particles acquisition than those with no such experiences, yet with strong presence of negative transfer from Japanese case particles. This difference, however, was found to gradually decrease as it went up to the intermediate and high levels.
Chapter 5 arranged the contents of this study, revealed its limits and suggested directions of subsequent studies. This study has its meaning in that it is a study on how Chinese speaking learners of Korean acquire a third language. However, it has its limit that it failed to specify how their Japanese-learning experiences affect Korean case particles acquisition in a specific manner. Subsequent studies are expected to supplement its limit.
