The purpose of this research is to construct educational program that teaches Korean and utilize it in class rooms to verify its effect. For this research, Mongolians studying Korean has been chosen as the subjects. Also, Facebook has been chosen, as representation form of SNS, and applied to classroom activity. In this research, to what extent the use of SNS has effect in classrooms that teach Korean in relation to motivation of using SNS, usefulness of using SNS, the relationship it has with academic achievements, motivation of using SNS in Korean class room utilizing SNS and what effects the usefulness of SNS has with academic achievements.
The subjects of this study were 51 seniors’ taking Korean economy and business translation class in Korean department at Ulaanbaatar University. The class used SNS to aid them with their studies in the classroom for 7weeks and survey was taken in May of 2014. The content of the survey included students’ usage of SNS, motivation for using SNS, usefulness of using SNS, their learning satisfaction and willingness to retake the course. To that information student’s exam scores and their level of academic achievement is mirrored. Also, as an analyzing method, average, standard deviation, percentage, factorial analysis, reliability analysis (cronbach’α), correlation analysis, and regression analysis have been used.
The conclusion of this experiment is as follows.
First, according to this study, significant correlation between motivation of using SNS, usefulness of SNS and academic achievements has been found in the Korean teaching class with SNS utilization. As a result, it can be said that giving motivation to students to using SNS and helping students to correctly recognize the usefulness of SNS prior to learning is required.
Second, the factor that effects the learning satisfaction is external motive of using SNS. As a result, to use SNS in classrooms it seems to be important to use strategy that could arouse student’s external motivation to stimulate student’s interest. For example, as a strategy adequate external rewards can be given, such as reinforcement in their social relationship.
Third, it has been found that internal motivation in SNS usage is the factor that effects the student’s willingness to retake the course and the degree of academic achievements. As a result, it is important to focus more in learners’ internal motivation to make use of SNS in the classrooms. To promote classroom activities and learning materials in the view of media integration, there is need to integrate SNS appropriately. By providing new learning method utilizing SNS to Korean learners in Mongolia, this research will present suggestions for using web-based instructional method that could ultimately foster learner’s participation and meaningful changes in the learning environment.
Also by applying the SNS, which is widely used in classroom today, to real university environment the study wants to objectively reveal the effect of the SNS in new environment and its educational usage. This study will provide baseline data to scholars who are considering to study about learning methods for Korean learners in Mongolia.
