This is for foreigners learning Korean for academic purpose to effectively write self-introduction letter for entering school. This is for education of writing self-introduction letter with genre-based writing approach that hopefully leads to successful communication in discourse situation in Korean. Self-introduction letter for school entrance is to introduce and promote oneself with third-person-observer point of view and succeed in the admission to a school.
Genre characteristic of self-introduction letter is that it is in interactive relation between the situation of school entrance, admission officer as a reader, applicant as a writer and text as a self-introduction letter. Writing a self-introduction letter contains significant value but the teaching and studying is poor in reality. With the educator explicit good text models and teaching leaners to well identify the characteristic of language, genre-based writing approach is a way to achieve proper writing in comparatively short time.
I analyzed genre characteristic of the self-introduction letter with two genre-based writing approaches, system function language and English for specific purpose.
In system function language, text is grammatically analyzed and the form of text is emphasized.
On the other hand, English for specific purpose is aimed for the successful communication of learners through the relation between text and context.
Both genre theories meet in that their goal is successful communication by proper context for the discourse situation in this . I categorized the genre characteristic of self-introduction letter in Korean by the resisters of system function language, field, tenor and mode. To analyze actual 50 pieces of self-introduction letters, based on genre theory, I reconstructed genre analysis criteria by evaluation criteria of writing. The reconstructed genre analysis is formed with contents, constructer, expression and functional aspect. With these analysis criteria, some special aspects of writing could be found. Teaching and learning self-introduction letter should include these aspects as a reference and those are reflected for the model of teaching and learning with genre-based approach. In the following paragraph, based on the analysis of these aspects, model for the education of writing will be built.
Most genre-based model have circulation model of contextualization, modeling, joint negotiating and writing. This is based on the genre-based writing model, which is reconstruction of Feez’s by Hyland. It emphasizes the direct participation of teachers. Also, it is known for specifying teacher’s role in each step and illustrating various educational activities. This model designed teaching-studying model for self-introduction letter and resulted in effective class instruction.
In conclusion, genre characteristic of self-introduction letter is significant in that aspects of writing could be identified with it and it could support the effective teaching method in writing.
