The fever of the Korean wave initiated tremendous development in tourism as well as culture industry in Korea. The world people’s interest in Korean culture industry directly led to the exportation of Korean dramas or movies. In addition, with the influence of broadcasting media, they are showing more and more interest in Korea, and learners wanting to understand Korean culture and learn Korean are increasing gradually. As the learners keep increasing in many ways, there is also demand on Korean education to try many different educational methods. Meanwhile, even the learners having their own academic or specific purpose basically need to acquire speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills in the steps of raising communication skills. Above all, it is necessary for learners to understand Korean culture in order to cultivate their communication skills properly in the target language society. Presently, in Korean education, many different educational methods are being tried by using dramas, animations, or movies. Particularly in culture education, since reading text contained in the textbook mostly consists of fragmentary explanations, it is hard to intrigue learners and allow them to have interest in the target language society.
This study focuses on the use of movies in culture education. The researcher is going to examine the theoretical background of culture education first and then develop a culture class model and teaching-learning methods using movies based on that. The ultimate goal of this study is to help foreign learners to understand Korean culture better and improve their Korean skills.
This study is intended to suggest a culture teaching-learning model using movies as part of helping Korean learners to understand Korean culture better and improve their skills. And the study will set up criteria to select movies and select some movies appropriate for Korean culture education among Korean movies and some of the scenes from them to design the model. The scenes or scripts of the movies will be edited and the conversational text will be converted to reading material so that it can be used as teaching material combined with movies. The body of this describes the study procedures and methods in detail. How this thesis is organized is summarized below:
Chapter 1, introduction, states the study purpose and suggests the importance and necessity of culture education using movies. It also presents the study method and range and conducts literature review over Korean culture education using mass media such as movies and dramas as well as culture education in Korean education.
Chapter 2 suggests the contents or types of culture being emphasized the most in Korean education and examines theoretical background in general to lay the foundation of this study and suggest the standards of it.
Chapter 3 examines the utility of movies in Korean culture education and presents the criteria for selecting movies as well as the list of them. By editing and remaking, a culture teaching method using movies is established as actual class and learning material.
Chapter 4 designs culture class by screening and making contents with the movies selected. It designs steps including introduction, presentation, and practice, builds a class model that can embrace the class in general, and propose a culture teaching plan.
Lastly, Chapter 5, conclusion, examines the flow of this study again, points out directions for further development and limitations, and concludes it by summary.
Basically, the culture class using movies provides opportunities to have indirect experiences through vivid pictures escaped from teachers’ explanation or analysis based on the textbook. Therefore, it helps enhance learners’ understanding of Korean culture and also improve their skills to use language properly for the context through the practice of pronunciation or conversation grounded on the scripts.
